Hey Guys,
I just had a question, whether there is anything like a 'PHP Certificate', something similar to other certificate courses like MCSE or Oracle DBA or CCNA. I read someplace where they claimed to offer a 'PHP Certificate Course'. Just need some opinion and feedback. Would love to get one, if there is.

I haven't ever seen an official one. Since php is not a commercial product it would be harder to come up with one certification that becomes the "standard". Eventually as php becomes more and more popular, there will start to be more to choose from.

I was certified through BrainBench. I'd check them out if I were you.

what was it like?
i mean, how can you tell that something like that will actually be worth the paper its printed on? (or the bits is sent with)
sure 50 bucks isnt expensive, but if its not worth anything to an employer it aint exactly a bargain

I would sugget that you go take a look. brainbench.com

As for it's worth. that really depends on the employer and what he's looking for doesn't it? My employer down here didn't care one bit as he was looking for someone with a wide variety of skills as opposed to someone specailized in one or two areas. He wanted demonstrated knowledge as well.

Additionally, there are a large number of employers that could care less about an MCSE or whatever that other garbage that MS was pushing for so long. I used to see people come through as interns that were studying to get their MCSE's or whatever, and found that though they could barf back data learned in a classroom, none of them had any practical experience. We're talking about guys and gals that couldn't diagnose or build a boxen if their lives (and the dollars of their employers) depended on it.

But they got their MCSE's  and nobody is the wiser until they come to work that first day and the blank look on their face gives them away.

So as to wether or not the certificate is worth something, I say no! Why? because it doesn't tell me that much about the person. But to others, it may be. So why then did I bother? Becuase at the time, late 2000, the test was free. I took it and passed.

Cheers,
BDKR

I agree with MCSE's meaning to experience. I passed four of the tests and started 'learning' on the same day. Armed with a book that could have been titled "just the answers" this was no problem - short-term memory is a fabulous thing but still it is neither knowledge nor experience.
If one day there is a 'canonical' PHP-cert it shouldn't be confined to simple "is that right or wrong"-questions.
