I just don't like people who are so strongly anti-capitalistic...for several reasons..
1) They will probably end up working for a big corporation sometime.
2) I'd like to see them do better jobs, so the shouldn't complain.
3) They protested all over DC last friday.. So I couldn't go to a big concert that I really wanted to go to, the city was locked down so i couldn't get in...

Yes I do hate Microsoft, cos I can't afford to buy any of their products(twigletmac wrote:That's kind of a funny thing to hear on a forum which deals mainly with an opensource piece of software...Takuma wrote:What's wrong with Microsoft people?
My hubbie is currently getting his PGCE (teaching cert) in IT - apparently it's all based around Microsoft technology (and the web design bit is supposed to be taught on FrontPage) so it's hardly surprising that a kid going to school in this country would say that. Open source software is not mentioned at all in the curriculum (at least not that he's found and he's been looking).
Mac
I'll stick my neck out.
I like Microsoft, basically I don't think computing would be as advanced as it is if it wasn't for them.
They opened computing to the masses without needing to understand all that command line stuff etc, before someone mentions MACS, MAC hardware is expensive and until recently no-one else could build hardware to run their OS due to restrictions imposed by Apple (that is hardly open thinking) so I supposed Apple had a monopoly in that respect. Hardware to run windows is not expensive. Okay hardware to run *NIX isn't expensive, but it is not user friendly. Recently I tried to install Redhat Linux, I have a very new graphics card and could I get a GUI to run, could I bo***cks, downloaded drivers, patches etc etc, nope not happening. Ever tried configuring a Linux firewall from the command line just so that my home network can get to the linux machine, no, give it a shot, hope you have better luck than me. What I am getting at is *NIX is not a good user experience, I know a lot when it comes to computers and I had probelms, I can just imagine my dad trying to install *NIX.
With XP this kind of thing (firewalls, home networking etc) are a piece of cake to set up, giving me more time to get on with coding and writing databases and not p***ing around with these tasks.
Another thing Microsoft did was get other people off their arses to do something about the crap MS software (personally I don't think all of their software is crap, I like the XP operating system and office XP), if it wasn't for them a lot of you would still be sitting in front of your command lines typing loads of stuff, no GUI's, in your own little world talking obscure switches and god --help anyone else that doesn't know them.
As a poll, which of you that has slagged MS use their software (and why if there are so many great alternatives out there).
Rant over

well i must say, ive tried linux myself, spent half an hour trying to get my modem to work, gave up and reinstalled win 98.
now i must say also that i have office xp and win xp, only recently installed win xp, its at least twice as fast as 98, and in a week its only crashed once (and i was really aggravating it at the time)
sure it has some compatability problems, but i think this time they have actually learnt the lesson of win ME (when i installed it told me what had problems, what as ok)
sure its expensive bloatware, but so far as im concerned its the lesser of evils

Just because
Well, let me preface this by saying that although I am new to PHP, I am old enough to actually have worked with computers PRIOR to the MS takeover. I remember programming boot straps, working for hours to input simple commands. . . etc.
So, coming from this school of experience, I must say that MS has done more for the advancement of computing as a whole, than any other single enity.
I admire Bill Gates for what he has accomplished, and hope he makes a few million more before he is done. That is the American Dream . . . to be all you can be, despite some singular intrests that assume he makes too much money. I only wish it was me, not him!
Is MS perfect? HARDLY!!
But their achievements has allowed everyone in here to do what your now doing. Without the current state of computing, there would be no PHP development Forums, or PHP for that matter.
If you want to change the way MS does business, develop a product that is comparable, and make an impact. But then, you would all 'give it away', right? I venture the attitude would change once the opportunity to make that much money became a factor.
There are alternatives to the MS environment. Several have been mentioned in this thread, although not without mentioning that they were not as 'user friendly' or convienant as MS products.
No, we don't live in a 'perfect' world where each of us is on an even playing field. What is cheap for one, can be priced out of reason for another. That will always be a fact of life.
The bottom line is you WILL spend what it takes to get the job done. PERIOD!
We owe a lot to the 'pioneers' of computing, for without them we would still be collecting punchcard chad for New Years Eve parties.
So order up another round of 'MS Brew', it's their party now. But with some hard work (and a little luck), the next party could be YOURS!

My thoughts on Microsoft
I have to agree here with the sentiment that if MS wasn't around, neither would most of this.
Just the other day I was talking to my local computer book store dealer (a great store, a great guy, and they only deal in computer books). He told me that while the world hated Bill Gates, he loved him! He said that if it wasn't for him and Windows, his store would have never existed.
While I don't like the licensing for MS products, and afaiac, OpenOffice is a wonderful replacement for OfficeXP, Windows, with all its failings, gives the majority of the people the majority of what they want.

As long as I'm not forced to use MS software when I should have a choice I'm happy. I have to use it at work because its the company standard. At home I'm much happier in Linux for my tasks and as long as the document formats don't break between MS Word I'm willnig to deal with the minor hassles of converting documents, or seeing them in slightly degraded forms, etc. However, their past practice of purposely breaking the formats caused a lot of trouble and engenders a lot of bad will.
