I have to agree here with the sentiment that if MS wasn't around, neither would most of this.
Just the other day I was talking to my local computer book store dealer (a great store, a great guy, and they only deal in computer books). He told me that while the world hated Bill Gates, he loved him! He said that if it wasn't for him and Windows, his store would have never existed.
While I don't like the licensing for MS products, and afaiac, OpenOffice is a wonderful replacement for OfficeXP, Windows, with all its failings, gives the majority of the people the majority of what they want.
Actually, if IBM hadn't opened up the platform so that any joe could build parts or write OS's for it, we wouldn't be where we are today. Windows just happend to be the OS they first chose to use.
Just in case some of you don't know this, it's the PC platform that is the commodity. Linux and BSD is fast making this the case for OS's, as is MySQL making the same thing true for databases. Now many of the software and OS (Windows) companies don't like this because it means that there is an alternative to what they're peddeling.
Two maxims: The hardware will allways cost and competition will allways make it affordable.
Now this has nothing to do with whether or not you believe in capitalism or communism. Just quality! If one thinks MS is quality, then this should be a different thread.
But of course, this is just outer layer of the onion.

my one cents worth

I have just recently moved back to using Windows from a forray into the linux world. I probaly would have enjoyed the experience more if I had the time to sit down a figure alot more of it out. I one day hope to go back to linux as I enjoyed the freedom it gave me and the open-sourceness of it all.
So here is my two points:
1) Linux is a great os for those who know how to use it and for those who have the time to figure it out. The linux world has made great strides is the last few years to try and make it more use friendly for the masses but it still has along way to go before it will be acceptable to the general public.
2) Although I loathe m$ licencing practices and how every "major" upgrade requires you to purchase even more software it generaly does do what people want it to do which is work. I know it is unstable at times and comes with all sorts of gliches and bugs but to the masses who don't generally push their computers to hard it works O.K. for them.
Besides if you want to use mySql, php and Apache on windows you can it just takes a little configuring and there are many sites out there that will help.
I hope i got my 1 canadain cents worth.
