TFT vs CRT

Post by rsmarsha »

Which do you prefer?

Just got a new TFT and finding it very bright (regardless of settings), also text appears a bit strange.

I like LCD/OLED displays, however, they have a physical resolution limitation (for clarity) .. which may be your problem, either your machine is too low to maximize the physical pixel realestate or too high and being compressed to fit. Optimal is the physical resolution native to the display.

They are bright, and often very crisp, which for a graphics sensitive person such as myself, is very welcoming. I hope to get one, if not two, or more of the 30 inch Apple Displays. :)

do you mean my g card or machine power?

For gaming what would you go for? Also does analogue or dvi input effect quality much?

DVI is MUCH MUCH better. Dual-link DVI is even better, but very rare on cards and monitors.

I was referring to your operating system's display settings regarding screen resolution. It's best to set the display to it's native resolution. This will make the picture as clear as can be, pretty much. You may have a faulty display, but that's not likely, compared to mixed settings..

Ah thanks.

My main concern is my eyes, lol. I work from home atm, so use a PC all day and have developer a cyst on my eye. Doc said that TFT's are much easier on the eyes. I got an acer atm which to my suprise doesn't use DVI, i'm thinking of changing it for an Ilyama 10ms TFt with DVI, good move?

anything with DVI is a leap in the right direction. Iiyama makes decent displays.

It is true that a LCD/OLED will reduce the eye strain, compared to a CRT. It's also nice to not have an electron gun firing at your head anymore. :)

...though for some people's eyes it's hard to make a switch. I used CRT for more than a decade, and I find it's painful to work with TFT displays (sometimes I have to).

Same here. I also am unable to switch to LCD for the same reason. I cannot seem to concentrate on the LCD's inspite of the say that LCD have better contrast than CRT's. I prefer Electron Gun than Liquid Crystals. ;)

I totally agree. TFT, Ideally on a DVI connection is far better.
*And hey* not so much of a pain with reflections from nearby windows ;-)

Doesn't mean I think there's anything wrong with CRT though - perhaps for playing video games (But i don't usually bother) I'd have a very large CRT...

I've got a 17" Sharp TFT running using the standing analogue signal. Will DVI really make that much of a difference? Is it simply a matter of switching cables, or will some config be necessary too (WinXP Home SP2)?

If the answer to the first question is yes, I'll be going out to buy myself one asap!
