first paragraph wrote:Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq: ADBE) has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Macromedia (Nasdaq: MACR) in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $3.4 billion. Under the terms of the agreement, which has been approved by both boards of directors, Macromedia stockholders will receive, at a fixed exchange ratio, 0.69 shares of Adobe common stock for every share of Macromedia common stock in a tax-free exchange. Based on Adobe’s and Macromedia’s closing prices on Friday April 15, 2005, this represents a price of $41.86 per share of Macromedia common stock.

Not sure really what this means, will the Macromedia name live on!?
Adobe was late developing web-design applications—particularly with regard to vector graphics and animation for the web. Consequently, Adobe’s LiveMotion application and (co-authored) SVG technology were too little too late (I’m still holding out for SVG, though). They didn’t stand a chance against Flash because everyone waited too long, giving Macromedia too great a lead in that market.
Incidentally, Freehand held an almost even market share with Illustrator until Macromedia changed its direction and abandoned the print world all together in favor of specializing in online design and production.

As long as they maintain their individual strengths, I can't see it hurting anything. I rarely use any Macromedia products anymore though.. while I use Adobe products all the time.

As I have posted on other forums about this topic the only thing I'm worried about is flash.
If they go messing around with actionscript putting there noses where it don't belong then that will be bad. However if they integrate some of the fantastic tools in adobe to the stage editor that would be sweet.

I think they will be a great combination. Both Macromedia and Adobe have excellent products for different reasons so hopefully they will put together the best aspects of each to make an amazing product line.
I'm glad it is Adobe buying Macromedia instead of the other way around (even though Macromedia is ahead in web development) because when Adobe comes out with a solid product like Photoshop, it has no real rivals.
