Norton Anti-Virus - Reasons for failure to delete/quarantine

Post by nigma »

I recently got a message from Norton Anti-Virus informing me that a compressed file in one of internet explorers cache folders was infected with a virus. I then promptly instructed NAV to "delete the bastard" only to get a message saying it couldn't. I was like "WTF Mate!?!" I then proceeded to manually go in and clear out IE's cache and then did a virus scan of the folder and it said it was gone.

All this rambling leads me to my question: Why could I delete a file that norton couldn't?

not an answer but imo norton sucks, AVG is a much better program and nowhere near as resource hungry and slow as nortons anti-virus versions.

I'm not sure because sometimes windows uses weird permissions on files and maybe the file was owned by something that norton didn't have permissions for.

I ran into the same problem with both norton and mcafee and ended up doing the same thing.

I think I even tried to go the delete temporary internet files in ie ran the virus check, said is was still there. manually went there and deleted the file. Maybe something to do with the infected file settings.

I use AVG just to add to that unrelated topic

the reason is because the infected file is inside of a .zip or .rar file and norton cannot go inside the compressed file and just deleted the infected file so it would have to delete the whole .zip or .rar which is does not have persmission to

hope that made sense

Crystal clear. Thanks a bunch for the help.

phpScott & other AVG users: Is AVG as good as norton at realising definition updates? If not how much of a diff is there? Intuitively I would think that norton would be better because they've got more riding on being up2date seeing as how they are a big company with products all over the place.

AVG release definiton updates all the time... (It can't be bad since so many are using it)

Why don't you just download it and give it a go... it is free after all :P

there are two versions of avg the free and the paid for version which gives you like tech support or they have email and network versions.

The free version gives you the same antivirus software as the support versions but it is suppossed to be for pesronal use only. you decide what you want to do.

Every time I check the website out they have announcements for virus definitions very similar time wise to norton or mcafee.

Their general idea is to give everyone antivirus software and make on the support.

Anyone have an opinion on Panda?

http://www.pandasoftware.com/home/default.asp

It costs like Norton but I think it does a better job. Ran it after Mcafee and it found 50+ more infected files include adware. Things it couldn't delete from the registry it simply renamed effectively nullifying the program...

I cannot remember the exact problem, but I think I posted it on here a while back (search the forums).

Anyways, if you are having the issues with Norton 2005, there is a few bugs and issues with it and windows xp.

The only solution anyone could give for fixing issues with it was completely nuking your system and reinstalling with norton 2000 heh :x
