RealPlayer: Not Connecting

I can't get RealPlayer 10 to connect to anything on the web. I've tried everything that Real has on their support page regarding "Cannot connect" messages and things still not working, such as performing a connection test from realplayer (which ironically said everything was fine).
Anyone experienced similar problems and willing to share their solutions?

Did you try... a reinstall?

why of course; multiple times making sure to delete all registry and possibly saved files from the old install.

Hmm... then the best thing you can do is start listing hardware/operating system/network specs. I'm assuming that you tried running it in Safe Mode, so it probably isn't a problem with some program incompatibility

RealPlayer can see the web; and as far as I can tell can do everything BUT play any streaming media.

If realplayer can see the web, you are having problems with the ports it uses for streaming media. They are configurable, and you can tell it to try proxying over http.
In many cases that won't work, due to firewall issues, or network setup. In which case, either adjust your firewall, or you are SOL.

Many files are only available in real format - making that choice impossible. Not to mention, some people have worse problems with the alternatives (windows media player files).
Also, there are alternative players for real.

I use Hidownload (alternatives? it's a bit of a nagware) to grab streaming media of the web and put 'em on my harddrive. Great for NPR's old shows.
