PHP Certification

Post by javaguy »

As far as I can tell there is no PHP5 certification available. Is that correct? Are there any plans to create a PHP5 cert? With my luck as soon as I get the PHP4 cert they'll create a PHP5 cert.

Has anybody here attempted getting certified? How was it?

How many people are certified? I searched through the "Zend PHP Yellow pages" at http://www.zend.com/store/education/cer ... -pages.php for people certified in my state (Massachusetts), and there was only one guy. How can that be?

Totally inaccurate: http://www.zend.com/store/education/cer ... cation.php

"Zend Certified Engineer - Current Count: 551"

As to PHP4 and PHP5, their faq covers that exact question:

"The Zend PHP Certification exam objectives focus exclusively on PHP 4. Given that PHP 5 has just come out, it will take 6-12 months for it to become widely used, therefore, it does not make sense to incorporate it into the exam just yet. PHP 4, on the other hand, is at the core of the vast majority of all PHP systems currently deployed, which is why the exam focuses on it."

Easy - because not everyone chooses to have their contact information published publicly. If you search for US/All states, you'll see 148 have chosen to do so. 148 people, 50 states, and massachusetts is fairly small, and it shouldn't be a surprise to only have one.

Thanks for the information.

Does anybody know when they plan on incorporating PHP5 into the exam? Do they plan to change the name from "Zend Certified Engineer" to "Zend Certified Engineer for PHP5" or something? I just want to make sure that my PHP4 cert won't be obsolete the second I get it. If they are just about to release the PHP5 cert I'll hold off and get it instead.

They have not published anything stating a date. Considering that the cert was established in 2004, and they stated on the page it would take 6-12 months for php5 to be widely used, and only have < 600 certified engineers, it wouldn't make much sense for them to wipe out the value of the cert now.

I would guess that it will be another 12-18 months before they switch to a php5 cert. However..

How about asking the people selling it?
