Well, it depends on what you want to accomplish.

The suggestion I often make for programmers that want to "get their feet wet" in php is to find an opensource php project they like, and try to help out. There are roughly 3,000 php projects listed on freshmeat under a freedom software & opensource license.

Any one of them could certainly use the help, and will likely already have interesting code you can learn from. Sourceforge has over half a dozen projects that are actively asking for php developers to help - http://sourceforge.net/people/?category_id=1 (Search on PHP in the page text).

There are games, programs, utilities, scripts, just about anything you can think of. If nothing else, its a great place to get inspiration about what to work on.

Of course, these forums are also a good guide to what people want. Lots of posts about login systems, database systems, encryption, logging, and so forth pop up each day. All of them are issues that people are actually facing, and would love an easy solution to - which you could write.

As I said, it all depends on what you want to accomplish. You might just want some experience, you might want to help a community out, you might want to change the php world. Hopefully between sourceforge and freshmeat, you can find inspiration. :)
