Pimptastic - Do let us know how IE7 is.

Up to ow, i am enjoying my IE7 experience...but the only thing different i am finding at the moment is the introduction of Tabbed Browsing...thats it.

As mentioned int eh other thread, still some compatiability issues with certain things

Well that's not good.

Hopefully they receive a lot of complaints about that and change it for beta 2/final release.

(no i'm not hacked, nay's actually posting)

i've got access to msdn, but i'm finding myself too lazy to download 2.5 gb on this 'fast' connection of mine.

mark, did you have any driver(s) that were missing? i'd try it out, but i'd go insane without my music. currently, i need to install my sound driver manually even on a xp.sp2 version.

From what I hear, most of the changes to IE in ver 7 is behind the scenes. They did a *decent* job making it css compatible. Something like 90% CSS2 compat. So I guess that should be nice when we develop beautiful things in firefox, hop onto IE and it doesn't look like hell. Besides for that, I also saw a rumor that IE7 is the last version of IE that m$ is going to come out with. After that, they are going to use an MSN browser or something? By that time Firefox will rule the world [www.spreadfirefox.com]

No. beta 1 made *zero* changes to the CSS engine, which is far below 90%. For reference, FFox isn't even close to 90%.

They have posted about numerous changes coming in beta 2 that WILL improve the css engine, bringing it higher, but still far below 90%. To be fair, they are trying to fix the very well-documented, very painful, tremendously important css problems first (to their credit).

That assumes that people will switch quickly to IE7. Keep in mind that IE7 will NOT be available for windows 2000. The installed base of windows 2000 is substantial. They didn't move to XP, to 2003, and they will be slow to move to Vista.

Being conservative, and saying it would take at least 2 years to switch half the users to IE7 (No win2k users, most XP users, and all Vista users), that means that until 2008, we will still be coding to work around the bugs in IE5.

THAT is why its critical for us to shout - LOUDLY - right now about the shortcomings. The lifecycle for IE browsers is incredibly long, and the changes come in very short bursts, only every few years. Lets not wait until 2010 to be able to code to standards!

Sorta true, sorta not.

They don't plan on changing the core engine to IE7, forcing a compatibility/API change. That doesn't mean there won't be an IE8, it just means they won't be upgrading the core API.

However, the big news is that they will NOT update Outlook Express. That in fact will be replaced with pushes to use Hotmail instead. Doing so should leave a large market for Thunderbird and by extension, Firefox.

I assume you're talking about CSS3?

I'm talking about css period.

There were *zero* changes to the rendering engine in Beta1. Beta2, which will be out in a few {weeks/months}, has many changes - including a shopping list of css fixes, which I referred to in a previous post.

Beta 1 was just to test the addition of RSS and tabbed browsing, for the most part.

update: In reading, it seems clear you were actually curious about the FFox portion of my comment. No - FFox isn't at 90% for css2. It is gaining ground rapidly, but 90% is definitely over-stating it. Keep in mind that css2 is a VERY large standard, with many very specific requirements.

A site on google that does an interesting breakdown on css compliance puts firefox at 71% css 2.1 compliance, with specific mentions of areas it didn't pass muster: http://nanobox.chipx86.com/browser_support.php
