msn virus

Post by s.dot »

anybody got the msn virus that says "hey, is this you?" followed by a link

I downloaded it, and realized it was an MSDOS application. So naturally I didn't want to open it. I right clicked on it and meant to click scan with AVG, but I clicked 'open'. Doh.

Anyways, now I have the smurfer! and it's not recognized by my anti-virus. Anybody have this/ know what to do?

google on the name of the MSDOS-application or go to one of the major Antivirus companies and see what their virus/trojan profile says that particular app does.

The first thing I would do to try and remove it is download F-Prot from F-Secure.

I had a virus once... and only once. All it did was cause every keystroke to print out "I love stinky underwear."

I fixed it by terminating the application, and deleting any files that started with msms% . Which effectively disabled windows & msn messenger. I then removed the messenger from the control panel, and deleted the left over folders. Emptied the recylcle bin, did a reboot.

Everything now seems to work fine. Hopefully it is gone.

Haha, that reminds me of the cookie virus, one of the first wide-spread internet viruses. It would cause your computer to pop-up an alert box every 20 minutes or so with the caption "Give me a cookie" and an "OK" button. Man, was that a pointless virus.
