Google Talk

Post by The Monkey »

Google Talk Beta is up. Like everything else Google offers, I love it. Clean, with no frills, you can search through your contacts (all two of them for me 0_o). It supports voice chatting, and requires a Gmail account.

That's what I said BEFORE Google Talk came out... those guys will come up with something else that we didn't know we couldn't live without any day now.

It's really simple to figure out where google is going to go next.. look at what yahoo and microsoft both do, and put them in order of user desirability..

Already done:
Search
News
FreEmail
IM

online finances
travel booking
...
office suite

Online finances and travel booking are extremely easy adds that build off what google already have, and they aren't impossibly far from an online office suite - which would put a hurt on Microsoft.

Even though Google copies a lot of stuff from other companies like Microsoft, their stuff always seems to come out great.

I'll surely give Google Talk a chance. It's gonna be hard for them to compete with MSN, though, but we'll see :)

I read today that Google may be interested in aquiring Skype and that Talk is a temporary forray into the IM market.

Would be cool.... Skype open to all networks...

Interesting if true.

You can already use trillian to connect to it. Its a jabber server. The google talk page has directions on how to set it up too: http://www.google.com/talk/otherclients.html

After using it for a while, I have requested both /me functionality and the ability to delete individual personal messages, instead of having to clear them all out at once.

Conference chatting is missing, though. Kindof a bummer. Maybe in a future release.
