Why Am I Here?
I first came here in devnetwork because of a coding problem and luckily, you helped me with it.
Now, I am continue to go here to read posts and to learn from them.
How about you? What is the reason why you are here? Select one then explain.

Had a problem, if I remember correctly, it was that I had never heard about cron jobs and needed that functionality. Someone took the time to help me out and I ended up asking some more questions... I went through different phases, one was to help others, then to engage in theoretical discussions (and to discover that I don't really like them that much for programming) and now I mostly happily moderate a bit here and there. One thing I do miss here on this board is a cup- or can holder. Nowhere to put my beer.

I'd have to say I'm here for all of the above three reasons, so was forced to vote "Other".
I first came here because I started learning PHP just as "REGISTER_GLOBALS" was changed to be switched off by default in the install and the book I was learning from was geared at them being on so I needed to know why none of the exercises were working!!
Since getting over that minor obstacle I've kept coming back to learn more and help out where I can....been here on and off almost 3 years now....

Yeah, I also tried other forums (usually customized PHPBB forum script). Even my country also has its own. But they don't seems to care. They just want to show how great they are and my problems ended up unsolved.Skittlewidth wrote:... been here on and off almost 3 years now....
That is the major difference with devnetwork.net. I feel like I am supported here!
Besides, I joined here since the start of my career in web development. No place like this one.
Hmm, I do all of the above as well.
I post questions all the time. I still tend to have a lot of questions.. and my mind never shuts off and I'm always trying to do something more.. so that leads to more questions and more questions.
Then, when I'm bored, I come here and read a few posts. Soak in the knowledge. Maybe make a little test program to double check people's accuracy.
Other times, I come here just to help people out with their coding problems.. if I can. I've gained a lot of knowledge since I've been on these boards.. so surely I must know something somebody needs help with.

Set Search Time - A google chrome extension. When you search only results from the past year (or set time period) are displayed. Helps tremendously when using new technologies to avoid outdated results.

I do most of the items listed, so I'd have to vote other. But I'm also here for a bunch of reasons that aren't listed:
1. PHPBB layout. I visit 25 forums a day now, and I simply don't tolerate the idiotic layout of sites like Sitepoint's forums. (Don't get me started about their popup ads..). This was one of only a handfull of php forum sites that I could stand the forum layout. (I'm biased, roughly 3/4ths of the forums I visit run on phpbb, including my own).
2. Great mods. The moderation here really does follow the posted rules consistently. Many sites thats simply not true, and they abuse power daily, leading to really limited conversations because users don't want to "upset anyone".
3. Good users. The posts are generally really high quality, the questions are useful to more than just one site, and the people answering posts have a solid understanding when answering - they aren't just answering to bump their post count with a "Hmm. Not sure.".
4. Fun attitude. It seems like virtually everyone here is in a great mood when they post. Compare with some other forums where a post about misuse of a pattern turns into a 30-page battle royale.. yuck!
It really hits all the sweet spots for me. Easy to use, good community, fun attitude. Whats not to like?

Thankfully we don't often get any real touble. Even then people deserve a chance to cool off. It's rare that we come across pesistent offenders who have to be banned.Roja wrote:Many sites thats simply not true, and they abuse power daily, leading to really limited conversations because users don't want to "upset anyone".
