Build 5219, the first CTP (Community Technology Preview) build of Windows Vista that Microsoft is distributing at the 2005 PDC includes many of the hyped features as well as some surprises. Because 5219 is being classified a CTP build, it will be available to everyone from Microsoft's website shortly (though whether they provide it as a download or make you pay for shipping on a CD is yet to be seen).

That'd be the 7 versions:

Starter Edition
Home Basic Edition
Home Premium Edition
Professional Edition
Small Business Edition
Enterprise Edition
Ultimate Edition

You couldn't write stuff like this...

My money is on a mix of Home Premium edition and Professional edition, depending on the price point.

To me it looks like they're forming all their OS's into one. (like their server line and stuff).

I'm probably wrong as I haven't been following this new OS at all but I wouldn't mind seeing that.

I installed their 2nd public beta version (2005 one). I had following confs - Win XP Pro, 512 MB, P4 3.2 GHz. I didn't notice that reqs. section said 'minimum' RAM 512 MB. Result, you ask ? Mere Taskbar (Start one) alone ate 20 minutes flat in loading... 8O Let alone whole desktop :x I was really fuming by now so I decided this goes. Now I am happy with my WXP Pro... until I see its time to upgrade :)

i think this is the best thing microsoft could do for open source OS's cause god knows this is what is the final thing driving me to turn to Linux instead of Windows. Do they SERIOUSLY think your average customer can afford that kind of hardware upgrade!? Man that is just stupid all the way around.

God only knows what drove M$ into creating such OS  If this continues, M$ will lose its customer base really fast. When the cost of upgradation is so much, and the ROI isn't much, what option remains but to switch to F/OSS. :(

I disagree.
As someone with fairly good PC hardware, I'm looking forward to a better looking OS.
If people can't afford a better PC (and they're pretty cheap now, let's face it) they can stick to the OS they've got. It's not like MS are saying 'You must buy Vista'.
