I finally got my dad to order me a copy of PoEAA. Now I'll finally be able to read the work all of you keep referencing.

There are lots of good books but this is a must-have if you're working with OOP. Fowler is a very lucid writer and sharing his knowledge can save you months (or years) of work figuring it out for yourself.
Another must-have is "Refactoring" by the same author. There's a link to the catalog of refactorings
here as well as some other resources such as the
Table of Smells.

I went to Barnes and Nobles last week with some friends... the only Fowler book they had was Refactoring
I spent a good 2 hours skimming / reading through it. I wish I had had $50 to plunk down.
