Desktop printers

What do you guys find to be the best desktop printer value? I have a Laserjet 4L that I treasure, but my wife has gone through inkjets at the rate of one every 7 months or so. We have tried HP, Lexmark and Canon and the longest one has lasted has been, I think, 7 or 8 months. One of the HP's only lasted a week (and HP user support was no help) so that worked out to something like $15 per copy. The Lexmark only lasted about three months...

They do not get heavy usage at all, and perhaps that is the problem; perhaps we do not use them enough. But after some months we start get getting "printer is not responding" messages and reinstalling drivers does not do the job. And/or the printer makes a horrible noise and dies. Or the carriage does not come to the center when the lid is raised.

They find different ways to fail, but to pay a couple hundred dollars for something that is going to last less than a year is starting to become annoying. Or is the problem my expectations? How long should an inkjet last?

Depends on what you want it for. If you just want to print text most of the time, pictures, or what. Epson is pretty nice, though. Epson and Canon.
