Sony, has went too far here people. If they find someone copying one of their cd's, what do they do? They take that person to court, and attempt to either a) sue them, or b) put them in jail.
The people, in turn, should do the same. They should not only sign the petition (found here : http://www.petitiononline.com/bcsony/petition.html), but should also file for a class action suit against the company. For this company to go this far is unjust. I for one will be filing a claim against sony. I hold more sensative information on my pc for my job and private business due to me thinking it was secure. But now I can see that it is not. This is such an outrage that I cannot find the words to accurately describe my feelings.

Go Linux!
Seriosuly though actually... after reading that, be it a trojan or a virus or whatever you would like to call it, it's still not acceptable to meddle with the very basic functionality of the operating system so transparently in that way. Not sure of the likelihood, but imagine you're writing an application that has a whole bunch of files named $sys$filename.h or whatever.... and they all vanish. You create them again but they go into a black hole.... that's just not acceptable.
I won't be signing any petition or anything though since I haven't and cannot physically be affected by that rootkit.

yeah I heard that song and dance a year and a half ago...and wet my pants when I did.One armed space goat wrote:I'd sign, but Tool is coming out with their first CD in 5 years and I'll be damned if I can't listen to it. (They're on BMG)
I'm to the point where I'll believe it when I see it... /me luvs Tool!
as to the topic at hand, I don't think it's a trojan nor a virus, simply something to prevent people from ripping cds. That's not to say that I think it's good practice, but I certainly don't think they're doing anythign malicious.
my $0.02
Not sure if it's in the article that infolock posted (I didn't read it), but I read an article yesterday about this very topic that explained that when you insert the CD, it opens up a license agreement that indicates that it will be installing something. So they're not doing it w/o your knowledge...but who the hell reads those license agreements anyway?timvw wrote:I don't care what it is... If it installs itself without that i've asked for it, i call it a trespasser...
Again, I'm not suggesting that I think it's a good idea...I'm just stating the facts.
I know exactly whatcha mean. Supposedly they're done with the album now though. It's expected early next year, but like you said, I'll believe it when I see it. Tool is the best band in history.Burrito wrote:yeah I heard that song and dance a year and a half ago...and wet my pants when I did.One armed space goat wrote:I'd sign, but Tool is coming out with their first CD in 5 years and I'll be damned if I can't listen to it. I'm sure Sony says the same thing about people downloading their music for free.infolock wrote:This is such an outrage that I cannot find the words to accurately describe my feelings.

The problem that in this case they punish the ones that did actually buy a cd... See the irony?Sami wrote:I'm sure Sony says the same thing about people downloading their music for free.infolock wrote:This is such an outrage that I cannot find the words to accurately describe my feelings.
