Google Talk

Post by m3mn0n »

http://www.google.com/talk/

It's been available for quite some time now... have you picked it up and used it? If so, how often?

For me, I got it when it was launched. I used it the day I got it with a friend, you know just to test things out, and since then, I've yet to have another conversation on it.

(And while we're on the subject, anyone use it's API?)

Does that mean that you don't like it? I've never heard of it but I'm pretty excited about trying it out when I get home. A lot of Google programs are pretty slick in my opinion.

Nah, that's not the case. I love it's simplicity and since it has Gmail Notifier built-in, I always keep it on.

I just noticed I've never talked on it since the day I got it and I know a lot of people w/ Gmail.

I guess MSN/AIM will never get toppled.

True, they are well established in the Messenger market. However, that can all change... fast :)

True.

Ever since AOL bought out the company that owns ICQ and MSN/Yahoo! signed that deal, Google is an underdog in this triple threat match.

But I think it can have a place, and a large one, but that relies on so many variables and a lot of them are not in Google's favour. Though some are, which is good. (Yeah, that was insanely vague, I know ;))

google is mostly in the technology/internet advancement world. sure us geeks would love to use this messenger :P but I don't think the average joe would be looking to talk to people on GoogleTalk.

That would be neat if it became a huge messenger though. I think it needs a catchier name.
Set Search Time - A google chrome extension. When you search only results from the past year (or set time period) are displayed. Helps tremendously when using new technologies to avoid outdated results.

GTalk uses the Jabber network - so Google isn't totally on it's own there. GAIM, Trillian, and I'd imagine other mutli-network chat clients can all talk on Jabber - so GTalk users aren't left in a world unto themselves.
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.
