$100 for this?

My Dad is part of a Taiji club and they want to make a website. So, I'm sorta the go to man for this job.
However, it seems they have purchased something from someone else. It's one page, with nice pictures and layout (well, at least they thought so). You can see it here:
http://www.hxedison.org/taiji/index.html
Now... the HTML is absolutely horrible, I'll probably end up rewriting the whole thing (although the pictures are nice), so do you think it was worth $100?

It all depends on who actually did the work. If they wanted someone from the United States, Canada, or most countries in Europe then it was a fairly decent price. If they didn't really care who did it aslong as it got done then they could probably have it done for like $30 by a third world programmer.
As far as a reasonable price goes for the project I would say it wasn't bad(thinking as though someone from the US made that).

what, that page goes for $30 from a third world programmer?

The graphic design work for that page is worth the $100. The HTML isn't all that great, but the graphic is slick and by the looks of it, somewhat time consuming.
I think a better question to ask is did they get what they wanted. If all the client wanted was a single page, massive graphic with a splash of text that offers no interaction, then they got exactly what they wanted.
If I were you I would offer to redevelop their entire site, offering user interaction and a cleaner, more usable interface. And I would quote them between $400 and $800 to do so.

That graphic is not worth $100. That site is something I could've made in about 5 minutes in GIMP or Photoshop. The HTML actually validates though just so you know, with MINOR adjustments (DOCTYPE and a few attributes shifted to CSS). I wouldn't have payed more than $10 for that site though, maybe that's just me.

You must realize that some people do webdevelopement/design for a living. You can do a project that takes 4 hours for $10. Thats probably how long it would take for the guy to do a good job at that site.(4 hours atleast)
I have a relative who just got out of a 3d developing/webdesign private university. He won't safely charge anything under $150 USD. But he's got to make a living off of it and he does good work. Not everyone does this stuff as a hobby.

...if i made $100 every 4 hours to do that kind of work i would be the happiest man in the entire world. i would work 2 days a week, 4 hours for each of those days, and still make more than i do now. give me a break i know people that do that kind of stuff (even better work) for 5 dollars a page, literally.

I do web developing for a living, and honestly I just don't think it's worth $100. It's a single page, no links, no resizing, no alteration needed and no dynamic content. The page is (honest opinion) worth $20 MAX. My reasoning is that he used other people's art work (the styles are far too different) and even if he did use his own work (which I doubt) it can't be worth more than $50 because most of those effects are really basic effects. I'm pretty sure most any GIMP/Photoshop editor could whip this up in under 2 hours, hence the low price tag.
For those making their livelihood off it, stop freelancing and get a full-time job

I know you'll be working for "the man" but it's a hell of a lot more satisfying and less worrisome since you know you're getting paid at the end of the day no matter what.

Quite right. You can be extremely successful if you play your cards right freelancing though.
BTW: 2 hrs works... $20. Ouch -- I wouldn't work for anything near as little as that

Neither would I, that's why I don't freelance and why I suggest not freelancing :p It's true though, you can make some big bucks freelancing, but it's a lot like gambling on your talent and your prowess...

I don't get paid a whole lot working for "the man" and all, according to currency calculations here is my base pay:
$2000 a month - 28010.383 EEK
+ $200 (BAS) - 30811.421 EEK
+ $800 (BAH) - 42015.575 EEK
That's generally after taxes so it's my take home pay per month. Come work for the US government
How much does your rent cost you? How much do normal things cost over there, like a hamburger or movie tickets or a DVD or...well, everything! I'm interested

$10 is about £5 in england, thats enough for a decent sandwich.
I know people that work for £5 an hour, it's probably the bog standard hourly rate in England. If you wanna work 9-5 every day 5 days a week then £5 an hour adds up, but lets face it, no one wants to work in a dead end job.
I do freelance work, I've never worked for anyone else though so I couldn't compare, bearing in mind I attend college full time (even though it's only 18 hours a week...).
I've just "reconditioned" a HTML website for a woman, didn't change the layout or anything, just editted/added text and changed some pictures and I got £150 for it, it took me about 8 hours (she gave me a file with about 20 pages of handwriting and CD's with images on...). You can see it here
http://www.guardamarapartment.co.uk, I was wanting more like £200 for the job, so I milked it and told her I charge £20 a year to host it, and told her I want 2 years upfront, I knew she would accept that so it adds up to £190. Bearing in mind her website is about 20mb and wont get hardly any traffic at all, I just put it on my space and pointed the domain to it.

Good Lord man, where do you get your sandwiches? The Ritz?
£5 = 2 pints of beer. Beerpints (c[[]]) are a good universal currency.
So, I earn... Er... (Start|Run|Calc) c[[]]7.5 an hour, before tax. Yay
