Check out the
Webby Winners.
I always have problems switching gears between programming and web design ... probably why I avoid web design.

Interesting. Switching between programming and web design is why I love web development... I have to multitask (something I got from my dad), or I go nuts.

Hockey, that site indeed has a striking picture, but to me it does a singularly poor job of saying anything at all about the product. What does it do, how does it do it, ....? It just names the product, gives a one-sentence definition (not description, merely a definition) and provides links to download it.
If you are going to design websites I hope you will be a little more descriptive and make some effort at actually making sales points about the product. Merely putting a pretty picture on the Web with some links is not web design.
And modern thinking it that it needs interaction with the viewer, some way to make the viewer feel involved with/in the site rather than merely staring at it.
Like Bhudda I try to avoid design since I am not an artist, but since I am doing the back end work for clients I keep getting involved to a degree in the front and I have developed some feel for what impresses viewers and what does not. Most certainly, Flash and animation do not, by the way.
I'm not sure you wanted all this advice, but...
jshpro2: That site is awesome. Commercial sites are one thing, that's what I work with day-to-day. Art sites like that one are a whole different universe. I am just greeen with envy at people who can do that.

I think your jumping the gun...
He actually does an excellent job describing the nature of the system...what it is, how it works, etc...
If I could work with that guy as my designer/marketing guru I would be very happy
My one complaint, is the quality of code...
Poorly designed, documented, etc...
So I don't use the product, but it still looks damn nice

Clearly I didn't make myself very clear - what else is new
I wanted web application interfaces which people thought were nice looking...
NOT web sites...I don't even bother with web site design...

"Jumping the gun"? I don't think it's outlandish to interpret "now i'm taking a stab at design" as meaning that you are venturing into website design. And it isn't real polite to say that someone is "jumping the gun" when he responds to a post with well-intentioned suggestions, however misguided they may (in your opinion) be.
And I have a hard time with your statement that the website you referenced "does an excellent job describing the nature of the system." I cannot find any description of how it is installed, how it is managed, in specifically what manner it "separates the content from the layout," what resources it requires, any screen shots of what it looks like, any references to who might be using it...

Hmmmmm....yea...I can sorta agree on that one...
Although I find it too cluttered at times and it requires HScrolling on a 17" running 800x600 resolution...
It's a decent interface...better than most OSS projects thats for sure
