so x-mas is coming along and my fathers like what do you want and i say a ipod. but which kind? how durrable is a ipod? i tend to beat my electronics up a bit more than they should, expecially the ones that i bring around with my outside of my place. i doubt i would need more that 4 gigs of music at any given time so i was thinking about the ipod nano 4 gig. but!

-soooo small. seams like i could break it with my finger and this thing will have to survive drunken days at the bar

-is that screen big enough to even read the lettering? also the touchpad thing, im skinny but the things like as wide as my thumb, is the touchpad usable?

the nano is right up my ally with the price and the storage but the regular ipod seams bigger so it would not break as easily. i need durability here. the 30 gig ipod is only $50 more and looks like it could take a bit more of a beating and holds much more music.

what do you guys think? ipod shuffel is out of the question.

edit: also, battery life. the biggest concern is the battery will just stop being able to charge enough to play more than a hour a day. how long will it take for that kind of degrading in batter life to happen?

I really like the little iRiver although it only has 1GB of space (I have 1GB, and, when you think about it, that's loads), it's gorgous and it's only £89.

It also has a full media big brother for £139, still only 1GB though.

i like the 2nd one but it does not seam to have the FEEL that the ipods have. i like the scroll thing on the ipod, i think its really a good way to navigate. plus the color screen in unbeatable.

the "full media big brother" is just too dark and i don't like the red background and touch screen. i am much more likely to break a touch screen than a ipod turn thingy (whatever that is).

I have over 90 albums in my ipod, which is about 6.7 GB of data on my ipod.. I don't for see me ever hitting my 20 GB limit..
If I were to buy a new ipod I would probably go for the nano, but if you beat the crap out of it i don't see it lasting very long ;)
My 20GB clickwheel ipod has taken quite a beating, but I wen't out and bought a nice case for it. I believe they have those for the nano now too though, so it's basically a matter of your preference.

I when you say you'd beat the crap out of it you really do mean it will take some hard knocks I'd avoid the nano. There are some "cool" cases available for it though if you are worried about breaking it.

My nano is already looking fairly scratched. They are glossy so they do show the scratches and fingerprints... I'd guess that if you dropped it face down on tarmac it would scratch to the point it would be hard to read. The text is certainly fine to read though... the resolution is good enough for it :)

I've never actually played with any of the other ipods but I think the next size is the mini and that has a lot more storage and is perhaps more robust.

EDIT | Oh... the touchpad is plenty big enough too... even for big fingers you just rotate over it in a circular motion and all's good :)

i am positive i can hit a 20 gig limit. 5 - 50cd cases all full of complete original cds will do the trick :) . i just read that the ipod nano screen scratches a lot easier than the regular ipod. in the end, would it be worth the extra 50 bucks to get the regular ipod 30 gig for the grand total of $300? The space would be nice since i definatly have that much music so i would never have to change but DURABILITY is the main issue. i read a few things online but i am looking for person expierence.

I found the iPod mini was fine (my missus has a pink one), although the screen has cracked.

If you try to fill it up with music you always end up skipping past crap you don't want to hear.

but you can create play lists correct? like make a list of "punk" "jam bands" "drunken music" and whatever, right?

Yeah, and you'll still have songs you don't want to hear on it.

d11wtq is did not see your post. after that i think i will try for the regular ipod since i very well might drop it on the ground or whatever in a drunken stupor.

anyone have a regular ipod and drop it or whatever and it not scratch bad? is the screen on the nano out in the front instead of indented? what about the ipod regular?

edit: grim... if i put on a playlist, i can put that particular playlist on random correct? thus if i song comes up that i don't want to hear then i can just skip to another random song right?

The screen on the nano is completely flush level with the rest of the unit. In fact there's a single flat sheet of clear perspex over the front of the unit :)

I've got a Nano. It's quite delightful. It's a lot more robust that the full size iPod .. it's solid state for a start .. no harddisc to break.

Yeah, I reckon if you get a case for it too then it'll be fine to be dropped on the pavement etc. Some of the cases do actually look quite desirable :)

my friend showed me a artical where they tested how much a ipod nano could take. well they ran it over with a car and it STILL PLAYED MUSIC! absolutly amazing. im thinking the nano would be the way to go as onion said there is no hard drive to break.

with the case that would make the screen indented a bit, how much would one of those cost me and where could i get one? nothing toooo bulky but somthing that would do the job.
