BBC 'Who Plays Video Games' Survey

Post by Grim... »

BBC wrote:The detailed project, called State of Play, profiled UK gamers and non-gamers from 6 to 65 and found that almost 60% played games.

Of those, 48% are women and 100% of 6 to 10-year-olds play games.
48% are women?

Sorry, but its a consistent answer, and I think you are ignoring a huge chunk of "why".

Card games! Solitaire, hearts, spades, the list goes on. Women in card games are incredibly competitive. The Sims has something like 2-to-1 women v. men purchasing! Myst was virtually the same.

There are a bunch of games that you might not immediately think of as "gamer" style games, which are definitely not office software. Because they are so large, they offset the adrenaline-fueled twitch-shoot first person slaughter-fests that typically exemplify "games".

Women are definitely a large part of the market. Not to mention, almost half my guild on World of Warcraft are women in real life. Times they have changed.

I'm aware the market has changed, but 48%?

I'm not convinced.

Aha:
BBC wrote:A gamer is defined as someone who has played video games in the last six months on any platform, including interactive TV (iTV).
By that rational, my wife is a gamer :)

:) See? It all comes down to definitions. Define the terms of the debate (or survey, in this case), and you control the outcome.

But I will offer that women are definitely a larger portion of the computer gaming category as well - definitely over 1/3rd.

I am! I know a large number of women that play. Of course, the bulk of those are younger, but it's there still. However, I also agree with Roja that most of those aren't playing FPS's or flight/war sims or other equally involved or violent games. Stuff like Zelda, Star Ocean, etc.... is huge with a lot of the girls I've come across as of late.

My girlfriend likes playing my games more than me  As a matter of fact I can name half a dozen girls that are pretty much classified as the typical PC gamer (not talking solitaire)

8O Where do you come from? Over here, I haven't met a single girl who plays games regularly. Only the occasional Halo session with the boyfriend, etc.

Lonely? :( LOL....

Where is "Over here"? I'm stateside. A lot of girls I've met in their late teens through mid 20's are down with it.

I guess the US is different. By "over here" I meant Germany*.

*) I'm Polish though! I always have to say this. I hate it when people assume I'm German. No offense, Germans. It's comparable to people assuming that you're Czech when you're actually German. Yea, I know... WTF.

I could make so many jokes about "the US is different". But on the Germany note, my Sister is deployed there (in the Army). Where in Germany are you?

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I just found out what this picture was:

It's from the forthcoming Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the GameCube.
I have to say I was surprised, I thought it was off the Xbox 360 or something.
