Big companies? Are they better, or something? But I will play along...

http://www.apple.com/ - Invalid
http://www.google.com/ - Invalid
http://www.hp.com/ - Invalid
http://www.ibm.com/ - Invalid
http://www.intel.com/ - Invalid
http://www.macromedia.com/ - Invalid
http://www.novell.com/ - Almost valid (1 error)
http://www.oracle.com/ - Invalid
http://www.sun.com/ - Invalid
http://www.yahoo.com/ - Invalid

Now get this: I only tested 12 companies for this list.

Ok, back to your list. Anyone can make their frontpage to comply with W3C standards. But how about the whole site?

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Sear ... laylang=en - Invalid
http://www.opera.com/download/ - Invalid
http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/ - Valid. Well, whadayaknow.
http://www.adobe.com/products/main.html - Invalid
http://www.att.com/gov/ - Almost valid (1 error)
http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Conten ... on-en.html - Invalid
http://www.loc.gov/folklife/ - Valid.
http://www.umich.edu/news/MT/NewsE/11_05/ - Invalid.
http://www.progeny.net/products/ - Valid. Who are those people anyway?

And those are W3C freakin' members. Not like it proves something, but still, such results raise certain questions.
