Web development, good career choice?

Getting ready to choose my career direction (17 years of age) I’m thinking about pursuing the web development field. I've been playing around with HTML for years and recently (about 6 months ago) got into dynamic content (PHP, mySQL and now CSS). I have my own site... with a member’s area (made some tools for a game). I would like to continue to grow in the area. I’m not really sure if there is a demand, or if it would even could be a successful career choice. Any input on the subject would be great.

besides asking us I recommend talking to your high shool counselor (prospective college counselor) along with doing search on job sites covering your area..that'll provide you with a lot of information

There is probably a demand, and that demand will remain to exist for a couple of years.. But on the other hand there is an extremely large supply too (even students that study tourism are teached html etc overhere..)
If you like programming i would advise to spend time on a more formal education as it will allow you to apply the principles you've learnt there in any discipline (not only webdevelopment).

Trust me, the demand is there. And once you taste it, you should take note that demand grows with every year as more users flood online and more businesses make the migration to the web.
And that's just for starters, there is plenty of business from redesigns, maintaining sites, expanding upon sites, and much, much more.
The beauty about this sort of job is, you can do it at various levels. You do not NEED to commit full-time to get experience in the industry. If you are not sure about it as a career, by all means do something else and do this on the side, then when you feel comfortable and your confidence in your abilities and your potential for success increases, and maybe even when you get a big break, jump in full-time and keep the ball rollin' by being innovating, working hard, and keep up to date on trends and emerging technologies.

If you enjoy it then it's a good career choice. End of story.

Well, my opinion is, if you sit in front of the pc ones you will sit there forever. If this ok to you, than it's your job if you have fun coding. I myself hope to get up the ladder - I did not start to work with my PC and did not start working in an IT company exactly for that reason.

I started out my career in front of a PC, now my job title is Head of Production. The only position further up the ladder is Managing Director. Considering I'm only 28 there's still plenty of time to get there .. If you're good you can progress to the top .. in some companies (eg, the one I'm at) having had the experience of doing the work from a junior level all the way to a senior level is seen as a very good thing.
