Ugh, ugh, ugh (stupid registrars)

Just had to shell out £100 to get my domain out of redemption because my stupid registrar didn't bother telling me it was up for renewal. Only discovered what had happened when my e-mail didn't work today. When I phoned them up they told me they'd sent 1 (one!!) e-mail a week before it expired (never received) and that I was expecting too much for a follow up when they had no response!!

Needless to say I am changing registrars :|

I would think they should send several - pending expiry, start of grace period, pending end of grace period...then tell you its a little too late...

I can see redemption becoming a real cash cow for registrars. If they don't get the fee then they can always auction off your established domain to the highest bidder.

Apparently it costs £50 per domain to transfer out :sobs:

Ouch!

I had a site with Dotster. The site came up for renewal *right* when I went on vacation. I didn't see any of the notices, and when I got back, they had an SEO page hosted on it (not kidding).

Needless to say, I was rather irate, and sent the SEO a nasty letter making clear my intention to defend the trademark on the name in question, as it had been in active use by me exclusively for several years.

The SEO turned out to be Dotster itself, and they returned the site, and allowed me to immediately renew it at the regular price - no redemption.

I've since been leery of the fact that they are profiting off expired domains, but they have given me fantastic service, and their contract does recognize my ownership of the domain (unlike Network Solutions, whos legal language states that THEY own the domain, and you are purchasing the right to use it for a period of time).

I recently had a domain that ran out too, but I didn't want it anymore.

They emailed me loads in advance but I didn't reply. I got a letter to my house with an invoice in order to renew the expired domain and it was £80, which suprised me.

Now I've seen that invoice I'll never let any wanted domains expire, no way I'm paying that.

Network Solutions charges a little more, but they hound me to death before they let one of my domain names expire. They start some 60 days before and don't let up.

They also have a nice system for combining all of the domains I manage, so I can look at all of them at once. Their services (imho) are worth what they charge.

Network Solutions is a rip off!

Super cheap and they send plenty of emails letting you know when your time is up. (BTW/ They also have a pretty good GUI)

I'm on automatic renewal. I'm okay with my registrar. I still receive the alerts and warnings that my expiry date is coming up which forces me to double-check that everything is on par.

Oh that sucks about your domain, twig. They definately should make more of an effort in regards to getting their customers notified about the domain expiration.

And GoDaddy is my personal favorite. Best service/value for the price IMO.

You gotta stand up for yourself man! If a company tried to do that to me I would start raising hell. I think its a gene in my family but thats beside the point! :p

As far as I know its illegal to charge a transfer out charge. I would file a complaint with the domain registry and then switch to godaddy refusing to pay your current registrars fee.

Last time a company didn't give me my way(broken computer, their fault) I raised hell and ended up getting a brand new computer with 2x the speed, higher quality parts and a DVD burner. It might have had something to do with me sending a 2 page formal letter, size 10 font to the ceo of the company. I was happy. When I bought my computer 2 years prior to this event it was a bargain basement price(refurb).

Normally if you start talking about how your going to make them lose more money they start paying attention. If they start getting cocky tell them about how your sending bad reviews around. Make sure and mention how you are informing hundreds of professional web developers/freelancers from around the world and that your a frequent respected member of the community they are from. Thats nice and juicy
