Truely Wireless Keyboard / Mouse

Post by Todd_Z »

Has anyone seen a bluetooth keyboard and mouse where the receiver doesn't have a long wire coming from it? I'm trying to limit the amount of wires running from the back of my comp - I figured someone made a little plugin for the ps/2 connections with bluetooth.

Microsoft's is quite nice. Only has a small, thumb transceiver.

I've tried the bluetooth mouse and can confirm it's awful. It's too big, too heavy, and lags if you play FPS. For the money, buy 10 corded ones and keep 9 spare.

They work perfectly for my gaming (lots of FPS) .. I guess I'm used to moving a heavy object around 8O

Yeah. I got wireless optical and it isn't nearly as good for gaming. Just like wired networks are better than wireless for gaming. And CRT screens are better than LCD for gaming.

But if less clutter > gaming performance, then by all means get that bluetooth one. It looks great.

I will agree that they are quite heavier than a wired mouse, and it does take some getting used to, but I really like the weight now.. and I've never had issues with it lagging at all, hell the wireless I have is quite a bit more responsive than my previous wired mouse. :?

Its going to basically be used simply for 1337 H4X0R1N6.... i leave my gaming to the consoles - looks like that micro$oft keyb/mouse will do the trick - thanks for the lead

Running ubuntu won't be an issue with compatibility... right?

Was that a dirty joke :) ?

Anyway they arent too heavy. Its a nice mouse with good tracking ability so i would reccomend it. But just for the sake of not having cables, it isnt worth the cost.

Mice are Mice... PS/2 will work the same as any other and just about all USB mice should work on /dev/input/mice, which Ubuntu should set up for you. Sometimes you'll need to set ZAxisMapping "4 5" in xorg.conf too in order to get the scroll wheel to work. Basically... it should work :)

<- Wired optical air-flo mouse, (yes it blows air so your hand doesn't get sweaty in a FPS)

That's quite a list :D

Here's the short version:
  • Half-Life 2 (PC)
  • Half-Life: Source (PC)
  • Counterstrike: Source (PC)
  • Doom 3 (PC)
  • Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 (PC)
  • Age of Empires 1, 2, and 3 (PC)
  • Final Fantasy....pretty much every one except XI (SNES/PSX/PS2/PC/NGC)
  • Metroid Prime (NGC)
  • Legend of Zelda .. most of them (NES/SNES/N64/NGC)
  • Parasite Eve (PSX)
  • Vagrant Story (PSX)
  • Ratchet and Clank 1, 2, and 3 (PS2)
  • Dark Cloud 1 and 2 (PS2)
  • Grand Theft Auto 3..all versions (PS2)
  • Devil May Cry 1 and 3 .. haven't bought 2 yet (PS2)
  • Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 3 (PSX/PS2) .. even the original non-solid's!
  • Gran Tourismo 1, 2, and 3..haven't bought 4 yet (PSX/PS2)
  • Halo 1 and 2 (XB)
  • Splinter Cell 1, 2 and 3 (XB)
  • Onimusha 1 and 2 .. haven't bought 3 yet (PS2)
  • Project Gotham Racing 1 and 2 .. haven't bought 3 yet (XB)
  • Burnout 3 (XB)
most of those I play on an ongoing basis, although not as regularly as I'd like.

Yes, I have an X360.

If you didn't know, in a previous life I was a professional game developer .. so I also work on cooking up new game things for kicks too.

For the new rig I'm building for work/school/play I chose a slightly less wireless setup: Microsoft's Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 mixed with a Logitech MX1000 Laser mouse. The keyboard isn't wireless, but is USB. My monitors have 4 USB ports each, so if absolutely necessary, I can be a good distance from the monitor with it. Not to mention, with all the crap I have that's USB now, I don't have to buy another hub for a few months anyways..

lol, how did you manage to get xbox, you reserved it?

thats pretty cool that you were a game developer, did you take part in the development of a game on the market?

i used to play Team Fortress Classic, yeah CS replaced it. But I loved it, i play it once in a blue moon. I used to have my own server and stuff, that is pretty much how I got into making websites.

Also for for the keyboard, cant you get a internal BlueTooth card, and then just get a Bluetooth Keyboard?

For FPS gaming, there isn't much that beats the Logitech G5 atm, purely because of the weight cartridge that comes with it, allowing you to put the COG where you want (within reason :P)

The cord literally is a cord aswell, so is more flexible than a conventional wire which makes a big difference.

On an IceMat and you are laughing :)

But then, I'm a very picky gamer.. still using a 7 year old keyboard because I can't find one with the right feel to it, though I'll be trying out the G15 soon..
