Post by malcolmboston »

i ordered 5 CD's from ubuntu.com 5 days ago and am still in 'approved' status, i cant really complain as its free but i was wondering how long it actually takes for them to dispatch the CD's, has anyone had any experiences with this?

Thanks

considering how easy it was to get hold of bootable DVD iso's, I just went that route. :)

for some reason my cd drive never works with most linux distro's meaning it boots, but then can never seem to find the packages, only one that has ever worked properly was RH7 which i purchased for £40, various magazine disks (inc Mandrake 10) wont find packages, im not sure why as it firstly recognises the discs and then doesnt recognise them, maybe linux doesnt like my CD drive but whatever

anyway the reason i cant DL it is because i have serious lack of internet connection @ home at the moment 8O

There will be packages on the yes... but being Ubuntu you're more likely to run "apt-get update" and then apt-get the latest package from the net rather than whatever's on the disc.... unless it's something huge like KDE and you've only got a 28Kbps connection :P

28.8kb/s is faster than my current home connection (ie. none) hence why i asked, i roughly have around 12gb of packages for Mandrake 10 + RH7 on CD's, can i install these or not?

You can install redhat packages on most distro's using the red hat package manager but those changes won't reflect in Ubuntu's package database. I'm not sure because I haven't been using Ubuntu for long but I'd guess that there are easy ways to convert RPM packages to debian packages.

Takes a while for the CDs to arrive - about a month or more. I ordered a mix Mac, PC, PC64 - each has an install CD and a Live CD. Gave three of the five CD sets away and thinking I should have ordered more.

You can use the Alien program to convert RPMs to Debs. However, in most cases this will be unnecessary because the Universe repository has almost everything

If anyone has any Ubuntu Questions, i have ben working on it for a long time, and you can just post here or PM Me :)

You won't get the mentioned Universe repository with the CD however - the DVD ISO has them I think (which is what I used when installing Ubuntu last weekend...

I can't use apt-get either - and I do have one of those 28.8 monstrosities... Ubuntu is nice, and Dapper Duck is out this April.

yeah if you cant use apt-get, then you need to download ubuntu, but otherwise there is no reason in doing that when you can get a bunch of nice pressed CDs. The great part is that when Dapper comes out in April, the current CDs will work fine because all you need is to use apt to upgrade from breezy to dapper :D
