Oracle buying Zend????

This is one of those where I wonder what the reasoning is.hawleyjr wrote:Wow, where did that come from??? I'm curious to see what will happen....
All of the major contributors to PHP are generally working for Yahoo (with a few notable exceptions). So they aren't buying to get the people.
The sourcecode is opensource, and isn't even driven primarily by Zend any longer. So they aren't buying to get the software.
Is the Zend name really worth that much? I really can't see that being true. The article puts it at $200million. Thats a hefty amount of money for the name, and their capital assets.
I dunno, just seems odd to me. I suspect much like the Winamp crew being bought by AOL that it will simply result in a cash-out for the notables, moving out of Zend, and onto their own.
Time will tell..
A couple of months ago they decided to give away their Java IDE (JDevelopper) for free, probably because nobody wanted it anymore with Eclipse and Netbeans being available...
Last month they decided to give away their ADF (JSF Components) to the Apache project. Probably because there wasn't enough demand for it to continue it's development...
Now i read they have decided do release lots of jobs because with the take-over of peoplesoft they have two times the same CRM department...
For me this is more or less a hint that they've lost quite some money in the Java world, and they want it to stop now.. To me it seems naive to think that they'll have more success in the PHP world when they buy Zend. Meaby they think to repeat the PHP-MySQL story but now with their own dbms? The fastest growing group is the one of unskilled programmers and they want everything for free. Although the market seems interesting, because it's so big and it keeps growing, i don't think it's an interesting market for players like Oracle. Finally they've decided to give away a free light version of their DBMS... But i'm affraid they're 5 years late...

As far as I can tell, the quoted phrase above is not related to the current discussion. It is just a sub-conscious reaction to a viral marketing campaign.Same as Google was doing when the news broke out that they were expand offices to Phoenix.
It's possible that something is happening, but both article and this whole thread is very close to being a kind of business gossip. Even if Oracle buys Zend, I fail to see the significance of the event for PHP.That means something's cooking.
