This is one of those where I wonder what the reasoning is.
All of the major contributors to PHP are generally working for Yahoo (with a few notable exceptions). So they aren't buying to get the people.
The sourcecode is opensource, and isn't even driven primarily by Zend any longer. So they aren't buying to get the software.
Is the Zend name really worth that much? I really can't see that being true. The article puts it at $200million. Thats a hefty amount of money for the name, and their capital assets.
I dunno, just seems odd to me. I suspect much like the Winamp crew being bought by AOL that it will simply result in a cash-out for the notables, moving out of Zend, and onto their own.
Time will tell..

A couple of months ago they decided to give away their Java IDE (JDevelopper) for free, probably because nobody wanted it anymore with Eclipse and Netbeans being available...
Last month they decided to give away their ADF (JSF Components) to the Apache project. Probably because there wasn't enough demand for it to continue it's development...
Now i read they have decided do release lots of jobs because with the take-over of peoplesoft they have two times the same CRM department...
For me this is more or less a hint that they've lost quite some money in the Java world, and they want it to stop now.. To me it seems naive to think that they'll have more success in the PHP world when they buy Zend. Meaby they think to repeat the PHP-MySQL story but now with their own dbms? The fastest growing group is the one of unskilled programmers and they want everything for free. Although the market seems interesting, because it's so big and it keeps growing, i don't think it's an interesting market for players like Oracle. Finally they've decided to give away a free light version of their DBMS... But i'm affraid they're 5 years late...

*yawn* Wake me up when it happens. Utill then all analythics is just a bunch of assumptions based on more assupmtions.
Spokespeople for Oracle, JBoss, Zend, and Sleepycat all declined to comment.

Same as Google was doing when the news broke out that they were expand offices to Phoenix. That means something's cooking. I'm sure Oracle has enough resources to acquire mySQL as well. That would be 15,000000.00 x $$$, how much?

Why would they need to buy mysql? They have already acquired innodb

As far as I can tell, the quoted phrase above is not related to the current discussion. It is just a sub-conscious reaction to a viral marketing campaign.
That means something's cooking.
It's possible that something is happening, but both article and this whole thread is very close to being a kind of business gossip. Even if Oracle buys Zend, I fail to see the significance of the event for PHP.

The business world revolves on speculation. Who know if its true or not? Oracle probably are interested and thus far its just rumour spawned by the above article and their source...

They probably want them for the next Oracle release that may have it's own scripting/programming language hand in hand.

Oracle is much more than a database, it's a development platform. It has native support for Java since release 9i (or was it 10g)?.

In that case, maybe they want to further develop that and to also bring it to the web.

So now that Oracle owns InnoDB... does that mean future releases of MySQL will not have the table type engine option of InnoDB???? Wow... if this is the fallout from Oracle purchasing InnoDB... how will dev's be able to handle that mess???
