8 bits per byte, 500KB/s is == 4Mbit
5.6KBs connection (56k)

the actual rates are lower due to overhead and protocol use

broadband for me though,.. 3Mbit down 512k up
I know that... I was giving an aproximation. :)

But thanks for trying to point out I was wrong. ;)

Its just annoying because of those of us on dial up are there not by choice, but because there's no reasonable alternative. I'm too far from the nearest exchange for wire broadband, too far from an urban center for cable, etc. Only option is available is Satelite coverage - but then that only effects download speed, its expensive, and you still pay for upload streaming.

The Internet is slowly leaving us behind. The more the net moves towards high bandwidth content the more it penalises those of us on dial up. I don't mind a lot - you can't miss what you've never had afterall. But stuff like Valve's Source is a nightmare situation. They stick all their updates on Source, and then what? I rely on (believe it or not) game's magazine front-cover DVD's for patches...:)

Still have not completed HL2. Sad but true.

Try living without internet connection, moved house, waited 4 ever for BT to set up, then fix the line now waiting for the connection package to arrive in the mail.

Going with Broadband because I can but using ADSL instead of Cable (not that it matters that much) because TeleWest in their infinite wisdom laid the cable along the main road but not into the little cul-de-sac that I live in. House 1 can get but the rest can't.

ADSL and Freeview for me.
