In case its not obvious broadband penetration in Europe varies between 50% and 70% depending on the country. Not sure where the EU publishes the annual statistics but they exist somewhere. It's likely not noticeable as much as it was since dialup users rarely browse to the same degree as broadband users - we tend to be limited by dialup cost rates, the blocking of external phone calls, or some other combination of factors.

We do however exist, and there are quite a few of us.

Tragically, I too am on dial-up at home. Why? Well I spend at least 8 hours a day at a computer and the last thing I want to do when I get home is sit in front of another one, so it's pointless spending £15 - £20 a month on broadband for very occaisional use.

I wish that someone would come up with Pay-As-You go broadband so I could just pay for what I use. Even if it was more expensive per minute than dialup it wouldn't matter too much as I would get the jobs done faster. I did look at Mid Band once but it looked like a complete joke, at least at the price BT was offering.

If I had to go back to dialup I would probably never get back online.

Hmmm... I see some people getting out their wire cutters. 8O

I started with 1 megabit cable about 5-6 years ago and then it went up to 3 megabit about 1-2 years ago and I think they boosted it again close to 5 megabit because I have been getting 500+ KBs downloads of zipped content lately.

Once you use broadband you get so spoiled going back to a 5.6KBs connection (56k) is just too painful. :)

8 bits per byte, 500KB/s is == 4Mbit
5.6KBs connection (56k)
56k == 7KB/s

the actual rates are lower due to overhead and protocol use

broadband for me though,.. 3Mbit down 512k up

Wow...that sucks some of you use dialup...

It's been a long time since dialup for me...

The local cable company convinced us way back in the early days to try their new high speed service free for 6 months...so we did and never looked back...

If it's any reconsiliation to you dial uppers...I remember using a 2400 baud modem to connect to local BBS's way back in the day...some years later paying compuserve crazy amounts of cash to connect at 14k by the minute...my old man once got a bill for like $800USD cuz I got carried away :oops:

Now...for around $50/month I get crazy blistering speed(both upload and download) and unlimited time :)

Life is good :)
