Name my new linux box

Post by phpdevuk »

I need a name for my new linux box that I'm going to use as my test server, in my usual unimaginative way I have not got much past calling it fed or fedora for obvious reasons. I need something snappy and zany, any ideas?

Do you have a naming scheme for your computers? If not, I suggest "Spud".
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

At my last company we used Top Gun fighter call signs for all the computer names. My PC was ICEMAN, the other developers were GOOSE, MAVERICK, SLIDER, and VIPER, the test server was JESTER, and the second server was MERLIN (I think).

My old office named boxes after disasters.

"HINDENBURG's gone down"
"SENNA's crashed again"

Etc. Etc.

My home network is all based on the Bloody Roar fighting game - I've got PC's called 'LONG, GADO, URIKO, YUGO and SHINA so far' (and yes, I need them all!)

I've been in offices where the servers were planets, or galaxies (depending on their function). Biblical "characters" are somewhat popular from my experience too. The last office I was at all machines were "beautiful women" (the server's were just random names.) I've seen jazz musicians too.

I haven't really settled on a naming convention yet for business or personal. Although most of the personal machines relate to their function or who they are for.

Not much help, I was.

I like using Spanish names (with a few off-beat names in there with them)...
  • Gregorio
  • Josefina
  • Octavio
  • Guillermo
  • Johnny
  • Javier
  • Helena
  • Yitzak
That's just me though.

An ISP I worked at named everything after Star Wars.

You can imagine my joy at "Bringing Yoda back to life". Much fun.

Personally, I name my machines after characters/roles from Piers Anthony's Incarnation series. Nature, War (OpenBSD), Good, Evil.. quite a bit of variety.

My Linux gateway has been "Evil" for over 5 years now, and my Windows desktop has been "Good". Upon asking the obvious question of why they seemed backwards, I had to quote Dark Helmet from Spaceballs...

"Evil will always triumph over Good, because Good is dumb". So true of Linux v. Windows.
