Need ideas

Post by alex.barylski »

For a new project...

Pretty much completed my lastest CMS project which is NOT open source in the GPL sense anyways...and now I'd like to start a project like Sugar CRM...

Make it open source and see which one makes more money...plus I just need something to do :)

Any ideas on niche market software which needs to be filled...

Wrote you're own CMS? Awesome!
Are you using your CMS someplace where we can see it in action?

Sorry, I'm failing to see a real correlation between a CMS and a CRM. :?

Sure, my own web site...but I'm not sure I want my site going public just yet...

It's a pretty simple CMS...in fact...its what a CMS should be IMHO...it pretty much just makes editing content easy...there are no sub systems support...no news...forums, etc...

Just plain jane html content...but generate organic search engine friendly web pages...no mod-rewrite required :) It's template driven...so you could quite easily add things like article rating features, etc...

I focused heavily on making it easy for "anyone" to make changes to a web site, not just geeks or tech savvy types :)

Thats cuz there is none... :)

I've worked on so many CMS applications...that I'm tired of them I want to do something different...like a CRM...or maybe a knowledgebase...at least until I start making money from the CMS at which point my attention will turn to upgrading, etc...

Ideally I'd love to work on a wicked class...something really low level and neat...but lets face it...how many classes (especially in PHP) do you know of that make money???

I tried that with C++ and MFC for years (custom control development)...it's a difficult market to penetrate...cuz programmers have a "I'll roll it my own" outlook on life :)

Cheers :)

Okay. It seemed there was one with the following:
and now I'd like to start a project like Sugar CRM...

Make it open source and see which one makes more money
mostly the "which one makes more money" part. Am I right in thinking that's the profit related to a CMS vs CRM? Kind of feels like an apples vs oranges comparison, a bit out of place but okay. Confusing, but okay. I guess I'll just shut up now.

I see your point, but I wasn't going to compare direct income between the two...

More like, if you give away source code as something similar to GPL (not sure if it allows this) but require commercial use pays a nominal fee, how many users actually play by the rules and pay (assuming you have an idea of how many people use your software). Whereas my CMS requires a license to be purchased first before source code is received thus enforcing play by the rules policies.

I'm sketchy about open source for that reason...why would anyone pay if you don't have to...I know thats not exactly the idea behind OSS but look at SugarCRM for instance...the basic edition...it's free...no money required...you pay for the professional edition and other things...

I've always used just the basic....and it's fine for me :) as it is for many many others as well...would I have paid if I had too...yes probably...but I didn't...so I don't :)

I'm not alone in thinking this way...

Anyways...I get the feeling I'm gonna start a debate about licenses and open source soon...so I too should shut now :)

Because i'm lazy and I hate to read legal verbage...I assume these images are free for the purposes I described earlier...

In which case, I will use them as I explained and if I get sued...your paying my legal fees :P

Just kidding...but seriously...are they free to use as I explained? I really can't be bothered to read that EULA for the images...

Each image is clearly marked as to what it can be used for. Most are free for any use.
