Need photos
I need 3 photos for my web site...it's a web site for a business...so I guess it's commercial...even though I don't make money directly from the web site...
Anyways, are photos licensed under GPL...can I cut them up, etc in photoshop and use them in my web pages???
Anyone know of a site which lists photos I can use for this purpose???
Does this have any effect on my content? Does my content become GPL'ed then???

Re: Need photos
Commercial status doesn't matter *unless* the license says it does. (Some of the Creative Commons licenses do). The GPL is not concerned with commercial v. non-commercial.Hockey wrote:I need 3 photos for my web site...it's a web site for a business...so I guess it's commercial...even though I don't make money directly from the web site...
Do you mean you have found photos that are licensed under the GPL, and you want to know if you can edit them?Hockey wrote:Anyways, are photos licensed under GPL...can I cut them up, etc in photoshop and use them in my web pages???
Its a slightly tricky area, as the GPL isn't ideal for multimedia like images.
There are many.Hockey wrote:Anyone know of a site which lists photos I can use for this purpose???
What type of photos do you need? (ie, "People", "Computer equipment", "Pictures of music instruments",etc..)
Its a rather tricky area. As a general statement, no.Hockey wrote:Does this have any effect on my content? Does my content become GPL'ed then???
Pictures tend to have either royalty-free (for non-commercial) status, Creative Commons license, or no license at all.
The great majority is the first mentioned type, because the GPL wasn't really made for and it's not really suited for photo sharing online.
Main reason why I think is because a photo is just a photo, there is no source code or method of development for the sort of thing you're talking about. Someone spent money, resources, and time snapping a photo and then sets the terms for it's usage.. not development.
But if you're talking about layouts, sure, I've seen a few layouts that are GPL. But if you want the typical business images for a site, I'd recommend purchasing packages or if you want high quality, go with the good photo services such as Getty, Corbis, and etc.

I hate legal mumbo jumbo...drives me nutts...
I once upon time used a site called istockphoto.com...used paypal to purchase a bunch of credits...then some while ago realized that paypal...no longer was supported...
So basically I dumped a fare amount of cash into that web site, got one photo and now I get nothing...I complained to them...and they said speak to paypal...so I contacted paypal...and guess what they said???
I'll just buy the photos I guess...avoid any B$...
Photographers should really follow developers and give away photos for free...
for any use

Wicked...really? I scoured the deepest bowels of Google and got nothing...wrong search terms I guess...Roja wrote:They do. Thousands of them. I'm happy to point you to an appropriate site with free, unrestricted photos if you will specify what KIND of photos you need.Hockey wrote:Photographers should really follow developers and give away photos for free...for any use
Can't help if you don't get specific.
Well...I need two...
1) 2 business professionals communicating to each other...
2) Photo of a tower. Base perspective looking straight up...
and of course...many others as I find fit...
If you could point me to a site where I could get photos I can use for any use...and for free I would be forever greatful

And yet I've seen programmers release source code under a "Do what you want" type license...Sami wrote:that would take away their motivation to take the pictures
I wonder what takes more time to learn and become proficient at...
programming or photography...

I use http://www.sxc.hu/
It's free and over the past 2 years the content has grown immensely so there's usually something worth using
http://corbis.com is a non-free alternative but they really do have a heck of a lot of photos!
