Google, imo is the best on the net. Whether it could be improved upon is irrelevant.
Ah, but the topic wasn't best *search engine* on the net. There are other sites that are better, and if you expand the category to include sites on the net, google isn't even in my top 100.

Best search engine? Yes. Best (designed, usable) site on the net? No.

I say it's the best on the net...

What do you think is the best?

I already gave over 200 examples: http://www.csszengarden.com

You are too busy arguing/defending your choice to read other replies and expand your mind. I considered your opinion. Consider others, and stop drawing a line in the sand to people who disagree!

Whoa whoa! I read every post in this thread... I apologize for forgetting your example. I'm not trying to draw a line anywhere. I even read the article you posted, although I think it's bogus.

To quote your article...
(Regarding the log-in links on the top of the page)
"What sense does it make and why are those links special so as to deserve such different treatment?"
Well... because that is the most common place people find a log-in link and because those links have NOTHING to do with the stuff centered on the page. When you go to a website where you know you are supposed to log in, where do you look? I look to the top right area of the screen. Also because Google's design is based on simplicity and they have not changed it as long as I can remember. To do such a drastic change as that guy did with the blue top and bottom and the links below in a box would be more likely to steer people away than draw them in.

"This page is primarily a search interface, but nearly all of the elements on the page have equal visual weight. The one group of elements that they’ve sought to make less conspicuous is the search modification links (item B). As there is no color or structure on the page, reducing the size was the only way they could de-emphasize these links. Bad call. They’re too small for some users with poor eyesight. They’re also poorly place, almost haphazardly."

I agree with this a little bit, but I have arguements here too...
They were forced to de-emphasize the links by making them smaller, but from the first time I used Google until this very day I know EXACTLY where to find those links because they are right next to the search bar. The very fact that there are so few links on the page make it VERY simple to find them whether you are visually impared or not.

I stand by my opinion and I think YOU are the one getting defensive.

Guys, I tempted to wade in heavily here. This is a simple discussion about "Best sites on the net". What happens? Everyone is at each other's throat. If you guys can't control your egos, don't post.

So, here is the simple option: you stop this crap right now and the topic stays unlocked, everyone is happy.

Type Yahoo.com or msn.com into your address bar and tell me what you see... a mess of news and unrelated garbage that I do not care to see when I am searching for something.
search.msn.com // msn.com is a portal. All portals I've seen are messy (except, perhaps, yandex.ru).

Leaving the thread. I've put in my opinion about best sites. Thanks for moderating with a feather touch, instead of an iron glove. (seriously).

Forgot to add the gold-standard of journalism online: http://news.bbc.co.uk/ - The Beeb on the web.

While it doesn't offer the bleeding edge of technology, it's simply amazing how they organise the very diverse content (and keep it up-to-date), incorporate video- and audiostreams, web services etc. etc. in multiple languages. The layout looks simple, but is highly optimised for online reading. A real treasure trove.
