Who cares if the source code sucks so long as it works really well? ;) Well, a few... I love phpBB's interface, and its also faster loading on slower connections for reasons I've never investigated.

I like phpbb. It is has all the basics you expect from a forum and you can't beat the cost.

As someone digging into improving phpbb, I care. Oh, how I care.

As to the faster loading, I'm with ya on that. I hope to improve that even further..

Fudforum is another forum package. This one made by Ilia Alshanetsky author of PHP architects guide to PHP security. haven't tried the forum yet, but if I need one I'm certainly going for this one. The fact that he's behind the software gives me a little more trust in it. All these security alerts I receive weekly about problems in ***BBthis, my**BBthat.... I'm really getting suspicious to using 3d party software now :?
