Someone give me a hand? Advanced server networking

Post by Trenchant »

I was wondering if someone could give me some helpful tips on setting my server up to run dual ethernet lines. Why is this important? Well I'm running a server/workstation and the server needs dirrect internet but my home network needs access to my server aswell. Current set:

HUB
+ Router
---- Computer 1
---- Computer 2
---- Laptop 1
---- Secondary Server Connection

+ Server
---- Printers

Basically the hub splits to the router and my server. The router is the base of my home network from there. 1 cord from the network needs to double back to my router. I'm running with 2 IP addresses so I can't link all traffic through my router and setup a DMZ hosting(I think its called).

If anyone knows of a good program I can use to decide what programs use what connection and be able to switch back and forth really easily that would be awsome. I wouldn't mind the extra security of surfing the net through a router from my server/workstation.

The box is running Windows XP Professional SP2 and all other computers on my network are running Windows Home SP1.

Any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Even if I could set my connections one to master and 1 to secondary that would be awsome. I want the connection from my network to be a secondary connection basically jsut for transfering files (backup) and acting as a print server(3 plus printers).

Thanks again, any help is appreciated. A tutorial would be great if anyone knew of any online ones.

Luke

*EDIT : I currently have dual ethernet lines setup but I'm having connection problems. Programs keep trying to use one connection but Windows seems to be blocking one connection outgoing. Some apps work and some don't. Only way to fix this is to disable the connection and restart(from what I've found) *

I found out the only way I could do this is either by getting a multi wan router or setting a primary and secondary internet connection.

Does anyone know how I can setup a primary/secondary internet connection? The gateways are set I just can't find a priorities section.
