an idea

Post by s.dot »

I don't really know where to put this, so feel free to move it if necessary.

I just decided to quit smoking today. And it's really hard. And I was thinking if i had like a clock that i could put on my webpages to show me how long its been since ive had a cigarette, and my friends could all see how long its been, that... that would be great! Motivation from peers is a good thing.

So it gave me an idea to do this. And call it like... the quitclock.com or something :) I know I would use one right now.

Does it seem like a worthy idea of taking time to bring it to life?

PS: I'm cranky

I'd say go for it. If nothing else, it'll distract you.
Real programmers don't comment their code. If it was hard to write, it should be hard to understand.

I quit smoking in 1984, not really soon enough, but thank heaven I did it when I did. Something like 40% of my lungs had already been destroyed by emphysema. I am paying the price now, and I really, really support you stopping. Now.

I have a cardiac arrythmia (caused by the pulmonary hypertension which is a result of the emphysema) and Parkinson's Disease. But the health problem that is a cause of "worry" to my doctor is my lungs.

Would that I had never started. But having done so, would that I had stopped far sooner than I did.

Again, I really support anyone who is stopping smoking. It is without question the best thing you can do for yourself and your family.

Congrats to quiting smoking dude...I quit 4 weeks ago (but cheated this last weekend with 4 smokes)...it's a tough habit to kick, but chewing my finger nails for 26 years as opposed to 5-6 years I've smoked was relatively easy compared to finger nail chewing...

The hardest the break, isn't actually a habit, but lack thereof...working out consistenly...thats a tough habit...to get into...

I admire guys who goto the gym everyday...thats some major disicpline(sp)... :)

I don't think working out is that bad. I do it every night possible (when my friend doesn't have work) and I kinda enjoy it.

Whenever we don't go I'm kinda disappointed.

Also, good job quitting, from what I hear it's quite a feat.

You could also put time-based 'achivements' in, like better sense of taste, harder.. well, you know, and eventually after seven months: Officially healthy again!

scottayy congrats on taking the plung! Do not do the 'oh well maybe 1 cigarette a week' or somthing because that DOES NOT WORK! Quiting cold turkey may be rough but its the only real way to do it. Have lots of candy on hand, stuff like jolly ranchers work well because you constatly have one in your mouth and they taste ohh soo good.

Also it is important to make sure your friends won't give you any smokes no matter how much you beg and plead with them. Make sure they just will not give you one no matter what.

Also, don't drink any alcohol. Drinking = smoking lots and lots even if it was only 1 beer.

My 2 cents.

I actually find playing sports is a big stress reliever ;) You can also work a lot of agression out doing sports too (not that I'm agressive :P I'm a big girls blouse :P)

Hmm its been exactly 32 hours. Not one puff ;) Your guys' support has been great. Thanks.

I actually still think its a good idea to do the quitclock thing. Might do it up in a bit when im bored ;) Should be pretty easy.

Congrats dude! I smoked for a whole two weeks about 12 years ago. I lit up one night and the match flared into my mustache. The only thing nastier than the smell of cigarette smoke is cigarette smoke mixed with burnt hair and burnt flesh... right under your nose. After two weeks, it wasn't that hard for me. But I know a lot of people that have struggled with this for a long time. Keep it up and stay strong. There are at least a few people here to support you.

As for the quitclock... DO IT! Throw in some funky ajax running clock for yours timing. Maybe make a user based site so everyone can have their own counter. They can invite their friends to view and next thing you know, you are sitting on the next Frappr or Flickr or whatever. You got a good idea and now that your hands and face are free of the cigs, you have a more efficient environment to develop in.

Good luck.

Have you given up the mustache, though?
