AMD or Intel? What do you prefer?

Post by Benjamin »

I have always used Intel, but I don't want to be content using them just because I am comfortable when there might be something better. What do you all prefer?

Was a fan of Intel until I switched to my current AMD 950MHz...

Never had a single problem...

The instruction sets are almost identical, from what I remember, it's been a long while since I read the IA x86 and compared it to AMD's...

AMD is cheaper, i've never had problems, so I'll stick with AMD for now on...

Although the comercials with the Bluemen...that Vegas side show...those are such wicked commercials...whenever I see anyting like that I just wanna geek it out as hard as I can...like speed reading a computer manual or writing like a 1,000 lines of code or flat out just disscussing the most complicated subject I currently can comprehend... :)

Cheers :)

I was pretty much always Intel for the longest time, but recently switched to AMD. Although I still have concerns about programming for them in "the real" (games and other low level stuffs), they have performed great for me recently. I can still remember having tons of problems getting an AMD to work with Windows 95 back in the days it was just coming out, and all the bugs we had with our games.. but from what I can see, everything is MUCH better now.

I can't answer this with a black/white level. As for the inevitable follow up, Nvidia. :)

I've used AMD since my AMD K6-2-300mhz. I haven't used a single Intel CPU since. They are THAT good. The price to performance ratio is unbeatable, they use less heat, and they are rock solid reliable.

As for Feyd's followup, I've used ATI pretty much exclusively since Voodoo left the market. Mostly due to opensource drivers for ATI are generally superior to the opensource drivers (when they exist) for Nvidia. That and I love the All-in-wonder cards. :)

That is what I figured. I have noticed that AMD chips are noticeably faster. I'll be getting an AMD for my next PC then.

As far as Nvidia is concerned, I agree with that 100%. My first pc had an ATI that didn't work very well out of the box, and 5 years later they still hadn't written drivers that worked properly. When Windows XP came out, it didn't work at all. Period. Nvidia on the other hand works great, and is easy to install even on a Linux box.

I tend to go with AMD, but I have had issues with AMD boards (I buy the most expensive boards). I actually had so many problems about 2 years ago that I switched to Intel where everything worked perfectly. I still have a soft spot for AMD though so I currently have one computer that is on the AMD path and the other Intel.

AMD for me. I bought it because it was cheap and fast. Now I have been using the same one for years and years now and have it constantly overclocked and I never turn off my computer. I never had any overheating problems even when I was overheating my video card to the extreme. AMD has just worked, not a single problem ever.

oh and ATI all the way except I must admit that I never owned a nVidia card and as I said previously, I was overheating my ATI while playing mad CS in the middle of the summer when it would get a bit hot in my room.

I've never had an Intel processor since I switched my Intel P4 2.4ghz for an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ (1.8ghz), and it actually ran faster.

Intel are coming back though, watch out for their Conroe processors later this year. Altough I've just built a new PC with an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2ghz) skt939 and it runs a treat.

With video cards... I've never owned an ATI, and I've never had any problems with Nvidia, so I've always stuck with them. Got to admit though Roja is right, the all-in-wonder cards are very nice.

In my new PC I've got a PNY Verto Nvidia Geforce 6600GT PCI-E, it seems to be doing well, although double DVI ports is bad news for me, I'm still with the ol' CRT monitor :) I need F.E.A.R to test out my new rig, but I haven't got round to installing it yet, I tried Medal of Honor Pacific Assault, but it's too old to put up a challenge, plus I haven't had much time on it yet, and have forgot to put the FPS counter on
