When I first started developing I didn't even know there was a manual. At the time I googled "PHP help" or "PHP tutorials" and found DevNetwork. Then, when I learned there was a manual I nearly puked at the amount of technical terminology that is used in it. It took me a long while before I started using it as a reference tool (though now I can't seem to live without it). But at first, it was all about searching google or DevNet for the information I needed because it was often real world applied PHP. The user comments on the PHP manual pages are very helpful too, but the lack of discussion of the comments make it a little difficult to understand the context sometimes.
