I ran a hosting company for over eight years, and worked at a national ISP.
I'd never offer it again. Too little pay, too much work, far too many headaches. I cannot comprehend how someone could think it is easy. The market is beyond over-saturated with competitors, and customers have impossible expectations.
Hosting = insanity.

Disable unnecessary ports and services - like telnet (use ssh instead) and such you don't need and which other people can misuse. Check Google on how to use iptables, actually google about securing a dedicated server and you'll find lots of reading...

But it all still applies to Windows too... You could have a cardbox box, a tin can, and a piece of string and you'll still need to secure it before making it publicly accessible - someone might hack in and steal your tin can...

Hey look, some crackpot hit the telephone pole by your house!
Oh look, now your website is down for ~8 hours. Talk about downtime.
Uh oh, you got slashdotted. Say goodbye to your internet connection for ~1 day.
etc etc.
Home servers are only good for development, or ftp.

Can everyone just take a moment to fantasize about two independent OC 48 connections to your house, in addition to 2 independent wireless connections - just for safety's sake.
I would love to host in my house - but exactly the reason that deadlyspork said -> giant snowstorm and you're stuck in vermont, there goes 3 days of uptime.
Cleaning lady unplugs the computer when she runs into the desk with the vacuum while you're at work? 8 hours.
you come home from the bar where you were rejected by a cute girl? you might have the sudden impulse to throw your computer out the second story window.
So many problems, so few solutions.

Also, what about upload speed? I purchased enhanced upload speed 8mb and it's still to damn slow....And way too slow to host numerous sites.
