Need a new-age 2 way radio device???

Post by alex.barylski »

I am in need of a hand held device which:

1) Acted as a two way radio - verbal communication with any other device on the same frequency *ABSOLUTE MUST*
2) Could communicate with a central server - via WiFi as the MAX distance is only about 100KM???
3) Allow custom software to be run on the mobile device - a web page pulled from the central server would be ideal
4) Small and light weight and cost effective replacement for traditional 2 ways
5) Some kind of distance measuring equipment as well would be awesome :P

Not even sure what I should be looking for...

From what I remember WiFi devices are capable of distance calculation? I don't need vectors, but just distance travelled...

Are there kind of PDA's or hand held device which is capable of displaying a web page, acting as a two way radio and also capable of communicating with a server?

Edit: Non-Windows based would be prefered...

Any suggestions?

Cheers :)

I'm not sure hand helds, like PDA's would cut the mustard, as I need 2 way radio communication as an absolute must :(

Thanks though...I'll look into RIM a little more and maybe fire off an email and see what they tell me :)

I think Asus and Garmin make things like you are talking about. Don't know about the radio, but if you have WiFi, a speaker and a microphone -- then you have a phone.

Maybe you could just stick a walkie-talkie and the PDA together with some pretty, shiny tape.

I thought about that :P

Unfortunately...thats a solution I think i'd prefer to leave to red green (http://www.redgreen.com/) as I couldn't put my name on anything like that

WiFi is a solution i'm looking into...

Cheers :)
