How to choose colors for a website?

Post by Crashin »

I'm pretty good with design and layout, but I SUCK at choosing color schemes. Does anyone know of a good tool or resource out there that helps color-challenged people like me?

I'd sure like to know as well.

Like a site that says if you use this color here are the colors that go with it.

would be nice :)

Right, or rather, "...here are colors that look good with the chosen color." I just don't have an eye for those things. I know there's color theory, but I honestly don't have time to learn it (nor the inclination).

did a search on google:

and the first hit was this:
http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/design/37.php3

which at first glance (haven't looked through it yet) looks very good and seems to be exactly what your looking for.

Why do most of the combinations remind me of the 70's and 60's? :D
just kidding - they are looking quite good when not used in stripes one by one....

Thanks for the link! Yep, that's pretty close to what I wanted. I also found a program that allows you to enter a color value and it returns colors that are related to it. So, it doesn't necessarily develop a scheme for you, but it does give you options to choose from that "should" look good together. It also lets you build a preview of what the colors will look like, including links.

It only comes with a 15-day eval, but it's only $25 to buy. I've only used it for a day so far, but it has helped a bit. 8)
