hello all,
i wanna whack this out there as i belive it could cause some real discussions and real interesting insights![:)]
if money was no object and you wanted to network your house, what would be put in there and why? so it could be some cat 5 cabling or could it be wireless? the choice is yours!

Re: dream house network????
It always boils down to the connection speed required...dabomb84 wrote:hello all,

I already did one of these. I used multiple lines of Cat6 to every room, along with brand new 75ohm coax. I had keystone jacks, so every room had 2 network jacks (one LAN, one WAN), a cable jack, and a phone line. About the only thing I would change would be adding speaker wire, so I could have a central music system. The GigE speeds couldn't be beat, and the cleanliness of the wiring was top notch.
Of course I also had a punchdown block as a demarc point in the attic. Sexy setup.

At the time I did it, there was far too much reduction in both latency and throughput in powerline cabling. I've been reading recently that it has gotten as good as 700+ mbps, but thats still almost 1/3 slower than my GigE, and I'm almost ready to make the jump to fiber when I get my next house. Powerline is nice, but when bandwidth is key, it doesn't quite compete. Thats the same problem I had with wireless (that and having to buy 7 desktop wireless adaptors when I already had wired adaptors for all of them!).Pimptastic wrote:Or use your house electricity curcuit as a network....all rooms networked, with no cabling.
That's how i have done it anyway...works a treat
Well, i mainly use the house network for all my xboxes in the different rooms running XBMC. I have a server hidden away with 1.2 terrabytes of storage that stores all my movies and music.
I mainly use the network for streaming music or movies to different rooms.
Tried wireless, but it just wasn't reliable enough to provide a constant stream.
If i could start a fresh with a new house, i would definately go the wired route, but using the electricity circuit is a pretty good compromise, depending on your bandwidth requirements

- Hidden rack room centrally located and underground, minimum two full height racks filled with blades another rack for the patch panels. The rack room would be a Faraday cage. Likely biometrically sealed behind 2-4" (7-14 cm) thick of high strength (think US military tank) steel. Paranoid? No. Prepared? Yes.
- Four gigabit plugs per 400 sq ft (37.16 sq m) of floor space and one fiberoptic per room solely for data.
