Do free ringtones exist?
Set Search Time - A google chrome extension. When you search only results from the past year (or set time period) are displayed. Helps tremendously when using new technologies to avoid outdated results.

What sort?
If your 'phone can handle MP3, then make your own.

I think there is software that will let you make your own ringtones also. Not sure if it is freeware (I'm sure there is freeware out there) but I have seen it, recently.

Sorry about the Neverland bit. It sounded so nice in my head and so rude when I read it back.

http://www.polymidi.co.uk/ Last I checked.

EDIT | Seems that site has died. You can find them as midi files on peer to peer apps although I'm not sure of the legalities - if you make your own midi files it's perfectly legal and you can of course share them but I'm not sure how you tell which are self-made and which are not. PolyMidi used to make their own and just offer them via a phpBB forum.

I have a whole stash from a few years ago somewhere.
