How do lab. freezers work?

Apparently IBM made a chip run at 500GHtz by cooling it to 4 deg. kelvin ( http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showAr ... =189500692 ).

How in the hell do you make something that cold?

You take one refrigerator, remove the compressor unit, fill it with something more effective, tinker with the insides and switch on. If you have an MIT education you should now have a super cooler which doubles as a portable tire pump.

Simple. Immerse the processor in liquid Helium :)

Quite right ;) Liquid helium is inert too so I reckon everything would run fine. Liquid hyrdogen probably conducts electricty since it has a lone electron like a group 1 metal.

And bring the pressure right down to way below 0.2 atmospheres, apparently.
