I'm looking for a high quality web based email script that I can instal locally. I need it to support attachments, inline pictures, and store the emails in a database? Any ideas?

d11's swift is supposed to be pretty rockin' but I still haven't had time to tinker with it (it's in code snippets)

Is this for receiving mail or sending it? Swift only sends mail out (and that's all it will ever do - I've had requests to add IMAP/POP3 etc but it's out of scope).
Have you looked at SquirrelMail and Horde? Not the nicest installations but strong nonetheless.
PHP has a tonne of functions to deal with receiving mail.

I'm looking for something to run on a personal server for sending, receiving and archiving personal mail. Hivemail looks great, but It's not worth the price to me.

Squirrel Mail (free) has my vote. Not sure about its picture support, and I have heard people be critical of it, but it works well for me. Seems fast and has quite a few configuration options.

Socketmail is another one I ran across when I was looking at doing this. It is not free either, but in my opinion knocks the socks off of HiveMail. Not sure about price, although last I had checked it was cheaper than HiveMail also.
Horde and Squirrel are pretty cool (and free) but both are pretty involved installations.
