The PHP rainforest

Post by Luke »

What ever happened to that rainforest that a few of you were building when I first started coming here...? I think it was pilau and a few others. I was really interested in seeing a finished or even half-finished product, but the forums where it used to be are gone.

It was just too complex for anybody to pull together and stop going off on tangents. It's on SF.net if you want to request a project takeover.

There a few conceptual snippets posted but nothing that anybody was interested enough to focus on. Everybody was too busy talking about groing plants and getting diseases etc without even consiering the fundamental engine from which this thing needs to run. The planning for something like this alone would take years in reality. It's AI at a very high level.

What was the concept behind it? It's purpose? etc.

To simulate live data from a growing interacting rainforest of plant and animal life (outputting it was another separate task).

An approximation would be possible, but unfortunately the will did not outlive the initial enthusiasm. Maybe someday, under different circumstances it might happen...

I tried once, but getting the soil out of my keyboard after the grass died was a pain, so I gave up on green-thumbery.
