I know from experience the Fedora Core install is about 30 minutes using a slow CD drive. A fast DVD drive will probably cut this time significantly. And 'out of the box' it runs. I did install some fonts and a PDF viewer, but Apache, MySQL and PHP were all setup during installation for me. Very user friendly in my opinion.

Good to hear that Everah. Having apache, MySql and PHP out of the box is a great plus too.

not trying to go off topic here but exactally what defines a PC and why is a mac not one? I thought PC was 'personal computer' and wouldn't a mac fall into that category? from my understanding there are macs and everything else is a pc.
if my understanding is correct i think pc's are best for the programmer but macs are best for the visual stuff like photo editing, movie editing, the sort. which is best for the average home user is always up to personal opinion.

Of course a mac is a personal computer. The op meant Windows pc, I think.
I would be interested in the reasons you think pc's (windows?) are best for programmer's.
Your assumption that macs are better-suited for graphic stuff is correct I think. I have yet to find a graphic designer without a mac. Should be a reason for that I assume.
There are so many issues playing a role here. Everyone has different needs. Uses different software (some of which only runs on one platform etc) and has different budgets. So it's not a black or white issue. For some people a windows pc will be a better choice, for others a mac or linux.
Personally I recognise a lot in the question of vchris. Having had so many problems with windows coupled with the fact that I am behind my pc for most of the time makes the decision to switch to mac an easy one (even though I waited too long). For someone else budget might be the most important factor, so a $500 low-budget pc with Windows pre-installed is the best choice.

I think this is wording that originated in the 80's (I bet Roja knows the true story). The earlier personal computers were deveoped by IBM. They became known as the IBM PC. Apple had developed personal computers also (which I wrote my very first program on long, long ago). Then, in 1989, Apple introduced teh Macintosh. Not the Mac, or the Apple PC, but the Macintosh. Somewhere around that time the delineation between mac and PC started.
On a side note, I remember being in college in the early 90's and the computer science guys would always make fun of Mac's. Tey said it was the stupid person's PC because anyway could use it, but only a computer wizard could work their way around a PC. I think this may be where folks began the idea that macs were for lame-o's and PC were for geeks.
I am not really a history buff, so I am not sure if any of this is right, but I thought I'd put it out there anyway.

Well I must digress, after further research...
The Macintosh or Mac, is a line of personal computers designed....

Same here. Nothing but Macs in my high school, too. Seeing DOS in college threw me for a loop, but once I figured out that I felt cooler being able to manage a PC, I felt like a stud and never went back. Though I am considering it at the moment...

We had old Apple IIe's and some iMac's in my elementary school. I hated them. Every other school I went to had Windows boxes and I liked those much better.
