ever find yourself frustrated? no one in my life that is close to me gives a damn about what I do..not even remotely interested..won't feign interest..so as a result I never get to talk about what I love...hell..even the people it puts food on the table for don't care..very depressing at times...

That is just how life is as far as I know.
I find myself to be one of the few people who will care about someone at no benefit to myself.
I only know one person who really cares about me.

well. People care about me, just not what I do. Which I find generally depressing.

The only people who care about techonology workers are other technology workers, and that is if you are lucky.

My mum and dad don't have the faintest idea about what I do but they do *try* to understand and do care

They were really pleased for me when I landed my job because they knew it was what I'd been wanting to do since I finished uni.
Among my friends however, I wouldn't say they don't care, they just find it a bit boring
Hey, and if you feel like you're friends don't care about you at all - come to Manchester and get some new ones cos that's pretty harsh. My friends are like a really big second family

My friends in Cali are like that. ^^
Not here in Washington though.

That's how it goes with most skilled professions, they don't care about the specifics
And that's why some think it's extra special when you're with someone in the same field of work as you
You seem to relate more to one another because of a better understanding through personal experience
Meh, it doesn't matter to me much though, I love being my girl's "little geek"

Most people are actually quite impressed at my job in the programming industry considering I am making more than most of their parents

I chuckle and laugh and hand them a peice of paper that sais "

Our field of work is a bit too geeky for most non-technical people. It's common enough that I don't mind it, in fact I rather enjoy it at times -- I don't have to talk shop to everyone.

Bah, I like talking shop. I pick up on new random crap all the time.oh well.all of em are commies. (obviously they are not literally commies and I love the commies too, this comment for the benefit of Roja. Our first arguement was about a comment I made about communists

I actually get rather annoyed when people start talking to me about my work when I'm not at work. I'm glad none of my friends know what HTML stands for.

I have been trying to get my friends and family interested in computers, particularly programming for most of my life, now I just accept everyone has their thing in life...most of which I'm not interested in...
So the door swings both ways...
My Mom and Sister are nurses and my sister loves spirituality (which admittedly I've been gaining interest in as an alternative to religion) but for the most part...he outlook on Wicca (form of Witchery or something) doesn't interest me the slightest...
My friends are mostly sports nutts or car junkies...and I have very little interest in anything mechanical anymore...
I fixed a few dirt bikes in my teens and thats about where I want to leave it
C'est la vie dude...

In fairness, our jobs
are a bit boring when you try to explain them, especially to a non-techy.
Chin up, Charles - I'll talk shop to you any time you want. Come to London, we'll grab a pint

Dude, this is expected. Imagine trying to get interested in any of your friends' jobs? For me, none of my friends or family really care what I do. My family cares that we can eat and live in a home that fits us, but even my wife and kids sometimes see programming as 'that thing that takes him away from us'.
Don't sweat it. Since they still love you for you, relish in that. And if they ever come around to caring about what you do, you'll be more blessed for it.
Besides, there are a community of geeks right here that care what you do (and that notice when you are not around

).
